Campell Eliminated
Kelsey Campbell’s bid for a medal concluded Wednesday when she lost to Yuliya Ratkevich of Azerbaijan.
Ratkevich had a 1-0 lead late in the first when Campbell got in on a deep shot and drove Ratkevich to the edge of the mat. Ratkevich used a belly gut to expose Campbell, but it sure looked like she stepped out of bounds before doing so. The American coaches challenged, but the call was upheld for a final first period score of 4-0.
Campbell took a shot early in the second period which was countered by Ratkevich in what would be the last score.
Campbell In To Repechage
Kelsey Campbell (55kg) has new life as she was drawn back in to medal contention.
Campbell lost to 2-time defending Olympic Champion, Saori Yoshido (JPN) in the opening round 0-1, 0-1. Yoshido went on to make the finals.
Campbell will face Azerbaijani Yuliya Ratkevich in her first wrestleback bout. The winner gets Valeria Zholobova in the Bronze medal match.
Campbell Falls To the Favorite
Kelsey Campbell (55kg) was game. But Japan’s Saori Yoshida is, well, the best.
Yoshida came into the Olympics the favorite again after winning 9 World Titles and 2 Olympic crowns.
Campbell shot a leg attack in the first, but was countered for the only score of the period.
In the second, Yoshida converted a takedown with :45 left to take the bout 1-0, 1-0.
While it was unfortunate to draw Yoshida first round, it was an encouraging performance, and the odds of getting drawn back in are high.
