Alex Tirapelle Out As Penn Head Coach
Alex Tirapelle will not be returning to Penn as their head coach next season
After just three seasons at Penn, FloWrestling has learned that Alex Tirapelle will not return next year as Penn's Head Coach.
During his three years at the helm, Tirapelle coached one All-American (Casey Kent in 2016) and 13 NCAA qualifiers.
The Quakers 20th place finish at the 2016 NCAA Tournament was the programs highest finish since the 2006 NCAA Tournament. Penn qualified five wrestlers for the 2017 NCAA Tournament and finished in 37th place as a team. On the dual side, Penn's record this year was 6-8, giving Tirapelle 15 total dual meet wins during his tenure.
Penn has already announced their incoming freshmen class, which includes No. 16 at 170lbs Khamari Whimper and Cade Belshay, the 19th ranked 220 pounder.
It is not clear at this time if the former two-time All American for Illinois will pursue another coaching job or seek a new professional opportunity.
UPDATE: Penn Has Released The Following Statement:
PHILADELPHIA -- Alex Tirapelle, the Roger Reina Head Coach of Wrestling at the University of Pennsylvania, has resigned his position, Director of Athletics Dr. M. Grace Calhoun announced today.
"I want to thank Alex for his service to Penn Wrestling and wish him the best in the future," Calhoun said. "We will endeavor to find the best candidate to lead the program moving forward."
Tirapelle compiled a 21-18 record in three seasons as the head coach at Penn and had five wrestlers advance to the NCAA Championship this past winter. He previously was an assistant at Stanford and UC-Davis following a wrestling career at Illinois where he earned All-America and Academic All-America honors.
A national search will be conducted to find Tirapelle's replacement.
