Most Returning 2017 NCAA Points: 11-20
Most Returning 2017 NCAA Points: 11-20
Who is returning the most NCAA points from the 2017 wrestling championships? We look at all the college teams and see who is returning the most firepower for the 2017-18 season.
The upcoming NCAA season may only seem like a distant ship's smoke on the horizon during these long summer days, but that doesn't mean it's too early to start speculating about the 2017-18 season. Indeed, it is never too early to start speculating.
To get a better idea of what we might see next season, we took a look back at the 2017 NCAA Wrestling Championships. We compared all the Division I programs by how many team points were earned by their underclassmen to see who will be returning the most firepower for the 2018 tournament.
We'll get to the top 10 teams individually later on, but first we'll check out the teams that finished 11-20 in our official tally. Below are the schools and the number of 2017 NCAA points they return to their rosters.
15. Edinboro 17.5
11. NC State 25
The table below presents a full accounting of every wrestler who scored 2017 tournament points and will be returning next season to our teams ranked No. 11-20.
Only wrestlers who scored in last year's tournament made the list, so guys like NC State's Pete Renda, who finished third in the 2016 NCAAs but took a redshirt season last year, are not mentioned. Additionally, Pat Lugo has announced he will not be returning to Edinboro next year and thus is not in our table, even though he scored points in St. Louis for the Fighting Scots. Corey Keener will likewise be listed under Penn State, where he will wrestle in the future, rather than Central Michigan, where he earned his 2017 NCAA points.
And of course there will also be plenty of wrestlers who will score NCAA points for the first time in Cleveland next March who are not featured here.
We'll take a closer at each individual team as we go through the top 10 one by one in the near future. Until then, stay comfortable but not necessarily numb, as we have plenty more content about the impending NCAA wrestling season on the way.
