133 was solid, not spectacular.

141 is just spectacular.  There's not only an excellent group of talented and savvy Freshman coming into the mix but on top of that large, young crop we've got two absolute hammers who will be heading back into varsity competition. 

Here's the 141 Redshirt Report:

Evan Henderson-UNC-The top monster Evan Henderson will be back for the Tarheels. I do wonder if he’ll go up a weight with Joey Ward having had a nice year for UNC. That being said, Henderson is the guy there and he’ll dictate where he goes not the other way around. Henderson didn’t wrestle a folkstyle match all season. He did enter a few Freestyle tournaments, however. Wins over Mitchell Port, Hunter Stieber(Cradle City) and more have shown us he can compete with the very best of d1 athletes. With the departure of Stieber, Carter and Port it’s very possible Henderson finds himself among the title contenders for next year. Alongside the next guy.

Rick Durso-Franklin & Marshall- He wrestled the entire season at 149 and honestly was pretty dang good. However, it sounds like he’ll be making the cut back down to 141 for next year. Durso placed 8th at NCAA's in 2014.  He notched wins over Lenny Richardson, Charles Cobb,  Solomon Chishko, Daniel Neff and Laike Gardner! He’s been great at 141 with wins over Mecate, Nevinger and Collica. He did have a weird loss to Seth Lange (by fall), but nothing to get overly concerned about. 

Solomon Chishko-Virginia Tech-The 141/149 situation for Virginia Tech is a bit murky right now. With two natural 149’s in Chishko and Mastriani (Round of 12 this year at NCAA's ) and nowhere to go but down (Brascetta at 157), something’s gotta give. My thoughts are Chishko may have to make the cut all the way down. What I’ve seen of Chishko is that he should be excellent next year and the feelings are echoed by anyone you talk to at VT.   He notched wins over Christian Pagdilao, Laike Gardner, Grant Leeth and Troy Heilmann. He fell twice to Micah Jordan as well as All Americans Lenny Richardson and Rick Durso.  He's a neutral dynamo with a great single leg (though he was very well known for his double in high school).  He attacks frequently and has more power than you'd expect from his frame.

Joey McKenna-Stanford-McKenna deferred his enrollment this year and did a mix of Freestyle and Folkstyle wrestling. He competed at Midlands where he had a tremendous showing placing 3rd. He only fell 1-0 to Shyheim Brown of Maryland while beating Josh Dziewa, Steven Rodrigues, Jordan Laster and Timmy Box. McKenna won a Junior World Silver medal this Summer and was an extremely coveted recruit all through high school. He’s positionally sound in all positions and will contend for All American status at a minimum in my opinion.

Alfred Bannister-Maryland- Alfred (AKA Baby J) had a busy redshirt campaign for the terps. Alfred was 23-3 during his redshirt season losing only to Mitchell Port, Tyler Smith and Todd Preston. He notched wins over All American Kevin Jack, Robert Rehm, Jordan Laster and Brandon Gambucci. Bannister is compact and difficult to score on. If he learns to trust his offense and pull the trigger he could be the next All American for Maryland.

Tommy Thorn-Minnesota-The final installment of the Thorn tradition will take the mat for the Gophers next year. Following his brothers Mike and David, it’s certain the expectations will be high for Tommy. Got to watch him at Fargo including a finals win over Ke-Shawn Hayeso last Summer and I was quite impressed.   Tommy hit a whopping 7 tournaments this season falling only to Nick Dardanes, Mitch Bengston, Josh Dziewa and Shyheim Brown. There’s not a signature win in the bunch to only lose those 4 matches out of the 40 he wrestled I found impressive.  specially when you consider he was competing at a much higher weight than he competed at in high school just a year ago. You could point to Topher Carton and Colton McCrystal as his most impressive wins. Thorn will be good in all positions and should be able to handfight at the D1 level.  Some say Tommy is the best Thorn of the bunch, I’m not going there, but I think he’s got tremendous natural gifts. The Gophers need a young boost and Tommy may be the guy to provide it next year.

Brock Ervin-Illinois-Loved watching this guy his Senior year of High School. Just like his style and how he attacks. A solid and busy redshirt year for Ervin as he hit 5 tournaments and fell to Gross, Dziewa, Lucas Stewart and Devin Carter. I’m not sure where he fits into the Illinois lineup next year considering Steven Rodrigues is back, but I included him all the same. Illinois has a log-jam of talent in a few weights and this is one of them. If he can break through, you can expect production.

Seth Gross-South Dakota State-Gross will get another opportunity to wrestle for Coach Bono at SD State.  Gross lost to then teammate Logan Ryan by a point early in the year but reversed the outcome to a 7-2 win later in the season. Gross fell in a 1 pointer to the very tough Todd Preston. Dean Heil and Jordan Laster also knocked off the Hawkeye Freshman.

Lucas Stewart-Campbell-Back to back days with Campbell wrestlers in the redshirt report. Stewart was the definition of up and down. However, his wins were outstanding. He knocked off Randy Cruz, Brock Zacherl and Brock Ervin. Now, Stewart was not without some setbacks suffering losses to Buckiso, Kingett, Isenour and Aaron Hansen to name a few. You can chalk a few of those up to typical redshirt inconsistency. Personally I’m pretty excited to see how he does next year.

Brock Zacherl-Clarion-Really excited for this guy. Maybe his results weren’t tremendous this year, but in what I saw of him he has the athletic goods to go with anyone. He had a great match with Mitchell Port early in the season. Zacherl notched wins over Kade Moss, Tyson Dippery and Dalton Brady this year while falling to Lucas Stewart, Zac Hall, Cortlandt Schuyler and Tyler Small. So he’s got some losses. Regardless, I think he’ll be solid next year.
