Who Had Their NCAA Bids Stolen From Them?
Which wrestlers had their NCAA bids stolen and could need a wild card to make the national tournament?
Conference weekend is over, and it was perhaps even more utterly chaotic than we thought it could possibly be. Included in that turmoil are guys who "should have" qualified for the NCAA tournament but fell short.
The NCAA qualifying process is fascinating in that a wrestler's body of work during the regular season earns his conference an automatic qualifier allocation for the national tournament, but the wrestler still has to match or exceed that place to get his ticket to Cleveland.
In total, 40 wrestlers earned their conferences an automatic bid to NCAAs but did not place high enough at their conference tournaments to earn that automatic qualifying spot. These guys are a great proxy of who will be awarded wild cards to the tournament. It is not perfect, especially when there are weights with more non-qualifiers than wild cards to give out, but it gives us a pretty good idea.
NCAA brackets come out Wednesday, so we'll know the wild cards by then. The automatic qualifier list can be found here.
