Can PJ Duke Make It Back To Back Years With An 8th Grade Champ?
A year ago, Mason Gibson made history when he became just the second eighth-grader to win a high school Super 32 title when he won the belt at 106. Now, PJ Duke, fresh off a win over #3 at 120, Stevo Poulin, is looking to make it back to back years with an eighth-grade champion. Duke is no stranger to making history either. Back in March, Duke became the first wrestler in New York history to win a high school state title as a seventh-grader. The New York hammer will also be looking to win his second straight Super 32 belt as he was the middle school champ at 95 lbs in 2019.
Watch Duke beat Vince Bouzakis, who is also in this bracket, in the Eastern States finals.
Trio Of 106 lbs Placers Looking To Move Up Podium
Three placers at last year's 106 lbs weight class will be back and up a weight looking to bring home a belt. Cory Land (AL) was last year's runner-up to Gibson, and Charlie Farmer (IL) beat Spencer Moore (KY) in the fifth-place bout.
An interesting note on Land, after wrestling 106 at Super 32 last October, he went on to win an Alabama state championship at 120 and even wrestled up a few times up at 126 (where we have him ranked) so, you have to imagine he will be the biggest wrestler in the bracket.
Watch Land beat Charlier Farmer in the semifinals of last year's Super 32.
This Weight Is Wide Open
While several weights in this tournament have one clear cut favorite or a top group of contenders, this weight feels wide open. Northern Illinois commit Blake West comes in ranked in the top five and was in the Fargo finals last year, Billy Dekraker was a Super 32 Middle School division, runner-up, Jore Volk won a Fargo championship last summer, Kale Lauridsen made a U15 world team, and that's just naming a few that could be in contention for the belt.
Watch West beat Penn commit Kelly Dunnigan at Super 32 last October.
