Sammy Alvarez Enters Transfer Portal
National qualifier Sammy Alvarez appears to be leaving Rutgers.
2020 NCAA qualifier Sammy Alvarez is likely on the move. The New Jersey native was reportedly released from the Rutgers program earlier this week and has now officially entered the transfer portal. Alvarez missed Sunday's dual with Rider due to "disciplinary actions with his weight” Rutgers coach Scott Goodale told NJ.com.
As a true freshman in 2020, Alvarez went 26-10, won the Southern Scuffle, and earned the 10 seed at the NCAA Championships. The following two seasons Alvarez competed in just 13 matches. After competing for the first three years of his college career at 133 and struggling with weight, Alvarez moved up to 141 lbs this season where he was 12-2 and ranked as high as #19 at one point. Alvarez will have two years of eligibility remaining as well as a redshirt.
Rutgers will now once again pull Joey Olivieri's redshirt to be the starter at 141 lbs. Olivieri went 22-11 and was a national qualifier for the Scarlet Knights last season as a true freshman.
