No More Registration Speculation: Spencer Lee Is On List For The U.S. Open

The Spencer Lee registration speculation ended Thursday night when the three-time NCAA champion submitted his entry for the upcoming U.S. Open.

In an interview last week with Barstool Sports, Lee said his status for the U.S. Open was uncertain and hinging on his health and readiness

“We’re working on it,” he said. “I’ve gotta be healthy, gotta be ready to go, first of all.”

“We haven’t fully decided whether I’m going or not. I plan on it, but I always plan on competing.”

Lee’s plans became one step closer to reality Thursday night when he registered for the U.S. Open, which begins April 27 in Las Vegas. Lee is joining a 57-kilogram field that includes fellow NCAA champions Nick Suriano and Patrick Glory.

For Lee, it's an opportunity to add to his sparkling freestyle resume. He won three age-group World titles during his days as a prep in Pennsylvania.

Injuries and other unfortunate circumstances, though, limited him to two freestyle appearances during his college career at Iowa. He ripped through the 2019 U.S. Senior Nationals, outscoring his five opponents by a combined 52-6 margin, punctuated by a 14-4 technical superiority win in the finals against Vito Arujau. Roughly 10 months later, Lee pinned Zach Sanders in 74 seconds at the Hawkeye Wrestling Club Showdown Open.

The winner of the 57-kilogram bracket in Las Vegas advances to the June 10 best-of-three series at Final X, where 2021 World champ Thomas Gilman could be waiting on the other side.
