Fargo Team Preview: Michigan's Bringing Back Proven Performers

With 15 nationally-ranked wrestlers, including a pair of returning national champions in Sabrina Nauss and Mishell Rebisch, Michigan appears poised to make plenty of noise in the women's junior freestyle division in Fargo.

Nauss and Rebisch won titles in both junior and 16U last season, but will only be wrestling in junior competition this time.

Michigan's ranks also include four returning All-Americans from last year's squad which placed second women's junior freestyle and fourth in 16U women's freestyle. Besides Nauss and Rebisch, Gigi Bragg and Isabella Cepak are also back for another run at the podium.

Many from the state's roster are fresh off helping the Michigan Blue squad finish second at the recent Junior National Duals in Tulsa.

On the men's side, new faces will have to emerge if Michigan hopes to better last season's 10th-place showing in junior freestyle and 20th in 16U freestyle. The state brings only one nationally-ranked performer to Fargo in Jackson Blum, a two-time All-American. Brayden Gautreau and Jarrett Smith are Michigan's only other returning men's All-Americans.

Wrestlers To Watch

#20 Jackson Blum (JR MFS/JR GR, 120 pounds) -- The two-time state champion hopes to crack the top five after placing sixth in 2021 and seventh last season in 16U freestyle. Blum, #57 on the national Class of 2025 Big Board, finished eighth in the 55 kg, U17 freestyle competition at the U.S. Open, knocking off state champions Joe Curry (Ohio), Stockton Allen (Oklahoma) and Gauge Botero (Pennsylvania) in the process. Blum, 76-6 the past two high school seasons, knocked off two-time Nevada state champion Manuel Saldate to secure seventh last year. Earlier in the tournament, he knocked off Florida state champion and 2023 Fargo Greco All-American Christain Fretwell as well as two-time Oklahoma state champion Gerald Harris.

Brayden Gautreau (JR GR, 170 pounds) -- The Central Michigan recruit and two-time state champion beat two-time Iowa state champion Nick Fox for fifth place in Greco at 170 pounds last year. Earlier in the tournament, Gautreau bested two-time Georgia state champion Tyler Secoy. Gautreau finished with a 152-10 high school record, 113-2 the past three seasons.

Jarrett Smith (16U MFS, 94 pounds) -- Prior to his high school freshman season, Smith finished third in the 16U, 88-pound competition last year, making him Michigan's highest returning male finisher. He dropped his opening match before reeling off six straight wins. Smith went 34-9 as a high school freshman and finished third in the state. He recently helped Team Michigan to a sixth place at the National Junior Freestyle Duals, finishing 7-2, including a pin and four technical falls. He went 7-1 in the Greco portion of the tournament, including four technical falls, helping Michigan to a second-place finish.

#1 Sabrina Nauss (JR WFS, 180 pounds) -- The three-time state champion is seeking a fourth national championship after winning both junior and 16U titles last year at 180 pounds and the 16U crown in 2021. Nauss, ranked #4 pound-for-pound, also took third in freestyle two years ago. Nauss went 11-0 in junior and 16U last year, pinning #2 Alvia White (Washington) in the junior championship match which Nauss led, 9-8, before ending it. White, #24 pound-for-pound is back this year. Also in junior competition last year, Nauss knocked off Minnesota state champion Kami Senlycki (#13) and Indiana state champion Avalyn Mosconi. Nauss beat #4 Kali Hyde (Oklahoma) in the last year's 16U championship match. In April, Nauss placed fourth at 96 kilogams at the National U20 Championships.

#1 Mishell Rebisch (JR WFS, 144) -- Ranked #4 at 164, Rebisch is seeking a third national championship after sweeping last year's junior and 16U, 152-pound titles. The Michigan state champion was also fourth in 2021. She trailed Stella Steigler (Virginia), 4-0, in last year's junior final before pinning the three-time state champion, who is #7 at 152. Rebisch bested Georgia state champion Genevieve An, #9 at 164, twice in Fargo last year, including a 9-6 decision in the 16U title match. She beat An in Junior competition as well. She qualified for Minnesota's boys' state tournament in 2022. In Junior competition at Fargo last year, Bragg knocked off Indiana's Rianne Murphy, currently ranked #2 at 100. Bragg also bested two-time Wisconsin state champion Brooke Corrigan (#19, 100) and California's Avy Perez (#26, 106).

#4 Belicia Manuel (JR, WFS, 138 pounds) -- Manuel's stock has been rising since March thanks to a series of notable victories. She is ranked #4 at 144 pounds and finished second in the 65kg division at the U17 National Championships in April. There, Manuel decisioned two-time Minnesota state champion, 2022 Pan Am silver medalist and four-time Fargo All-American Skylar Little Soldier (#5, 144) in the semifinals.
