Fargo Team Preview: Ohio Gearing Up For Another Strong Showing

Team Ohio is gearing up for a strong performance in Fargo. At the National Duals in June, the state's 16U men's freestyle team finished third, taking out Pennsylvania in the final bout. The Junior men's freestyle team made it to the Junior Duals final before falling to a tough Illinois team by 10 points. These results are no surprise for Ohio natives, with the state annually producing several strong teams. Ohio has a tough group in the national ranking’s top 10 and an extensive list inside the top 20. A big eye-catcher for Team Ohio fans is the massive list of honorable mentions entering Fargo. These tend to be the sleeper All-Americans that most teams need to take home a Fargo Team Trophy.

Wrestlers To Watch

#1 Savannah Isaac (JR WFS, 200) — Isaac pulled off an impressive accomplishment at last year’s tournament, taking home stop signs in two different divisions. She will be in the Junior division this year, looking to repeat her title run. She will have another top-ranked wrestler in her weight, so it will be one of the top weights to watch in North Dakota.

#5 Grey Burnett (16U MFS, 106) — Burnett might be the top middle schooler to watch at Fargo. He made a name for himself at the U17 World Team Trials making the finals. He will be one of Ohio’s favorites to take home gold.

#6 Omar Ayoub (JR MFS, 138) — The Ayoub brothers turned their brackets upside down at last year’s national tournament. Both made the semifinals, with Omar eventually becoming a sixth-place All-American. Since then, Omar won his second state title, committed to Nebraska, and had a strong Junior dual showing.

#7 Ethan Birden (JR MFS, 160) — Birden did not place at Fargo last year, but since then he has made some serious gains. He made the Ironman finals in the fall, beating Joe Sealey in an electric match. He won his first Ohio State title in an intense weight class. Birden is an Ohio State commit and a contender to win the 160 Junior weight class.

#9 Brock Herman (JR MFS, 152) — Herman is another strong Ohio State commit on the team. He took third at last year’s Ironman after losing in the quarterfinals to Ty Wilson. Herman avenged that defeat in the Ohio State semifinals before winning his first state title. Herman has also won and placed at several college opens as a high schooler. He will be in a loaded weight class, but this would not be the first time he overcame the odds.

#6 at 182 — Jarrell Miller Jr. (JR MFS, 182) — Miller is no stranger to Fargo titles. He won a 170-pound title in 2022 in the 16U division. He will be chasing another freestyle title in the Junior division this year. To add to his credentials, he made the Ironman and state finals during this past season.
