Wrestling is one of the most universally accepted and inclusive sports in the world. It essentially requires no equipment and matches can take place anywhere. Think of all the pick-up bouts that take place in the living room or in the backyard.

Starting scholastically requires a few pieces of equipment, though. Shoes are essential since proper footwork is the foundation of the sport. Costs can vary, but this link provides a guide to purchasing shoes.

Wrestling shoes range from $50 to $200 depending on the brand.

Getting started is one thing; competing is another.

A wrestler can practice in shorts and a shirt but many compete in a one-piece singlet or fighter shorts and shirt. Prices vary between $25 and $100 depending on the brand. Schools may provide a singlet for scholastic competitions.

Some scholastic events require headgear. This is used to protect a wrestler’s ears during competition and practice. Plan on paying between $20 and $50 depending on the brand if the school does not provide it.

Other accessories could include a mouthguard, kneepads, elbow pads, backpacks, and socks. Below is a range of prices for each.

Mouth guard: $5 to $20
Kneepad: $15 to $50
Elbowpad: $5 to $20
Backpacks: $25 to $150
Socks: $5 to $50

Purchasing every piece of equipment listed above puts you in the range of $150 to $640 as long as you have a pair of shorts and a shirt.

Other things to consider once you get started.

— Most individual tournaments require an entry fee. Local tournaments are typically cheaper than national tournaments.

— Many wrestlers join a club for part or all of the year, which will require additional costs. Some coaches offer private lessons, which cost more than a monthly membership.

— Some parents purchase mats so their kids can train at home. This isn’t needed if you have access to a wrestling room but some like the instant access it provides.
