The New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) tweeted that it approved freestyle wrestling for the Girls Wrestling State Championships.
New York is the first state to offer a scholastic freestyle state wrestling championships. Freestyle rules will be fully implemented during the 2024-25 season.
"Five years ago, when we looked at the path for a girls' championship in New York we knew it would take longer than other states; we also knew that NY was uniquely positioned to choose freestyle for the girls," said Kyra Barry, USA Wrestling Women's Leader and chair of the New York Girls Wrestling Working Group. "I am so proud of the hard work that New York coaches, administrators, advocates, and NYPHSAA have done to establish a girls' championship that is centered on girls. Most of all, I am happy for the generations of girls who will benefit from a freestyle high school season."
