UNC Wrestling Star Lachlan McNeil Wins Olympic Trials
University of North Carolina star Lachlan McNeil won the Canadian Olympic Trials in straight matches.
Lachlan McNeil took the first step to becoming an Olympian. The University of North Carolina star won the Canadian Olympic Trials at 65 kg (143 pounds) with 7-2 and 10-0 wins over Mike Asselstine in the best-of-three series.
McNeil will represent Canada at the 2024 Pan American Olympic Games Qualifier in Acapulco, Mexico, on February 29-March 2 for the right to participate in the Olympics. The Toronto native will have one more opportunity after that if he doesn't place in the top two in Acapulco.
Either Nick Lee or Yianni Diakomihalis will compete at Pan-Ams since the United States has not qualified for the weight, either.
Canada has yet to qualify a wrestler for the 2024 Olympic Games since no wrestler from the team placed in the top five at the 2023 World Championships. McNeil went 0-1 at Worlds earlier this year after finishing fourth at the NCAA Championships (141 pounds) in March. He is currently ranked #5 in FloWrestling's D1 men's college rankings.
