Purdue's True Freshman Joey Blaze Upsets #3 Peyton Robb
Purdue's true freshman Joey Blaze pulled off an incredible upset over two-time All-American Peyton Robb.
Purdue's true freshman #23 Joey Blaze pulled off an incredible upset on Sunday when he pinned two-time All-American #3 Peyton Robb. In their match, the two got into several wild exchanges in the first period but neither wrestler converted for any takedowns. Then in the second period, Robb earned a reversal to take a 2-0 but Blaze responded quickly with an escape to make it 2-1 going into the third period.
Down by a point, Blaze went down to start the third period and Robb committed to his ride looking to secure a riding time point. However, Blaze's opportunity came with just over a minute to go in the match when he rolled through to start a scramble. In the scramble, Robb almost earned back points but Blaze was able to pass Robb's leg, catch Robb on his back, and secure the fall. Watch the final sequence that led to Blaze's pin in the tweet below.

With the win over Robb, Joey Blaze moves to 14-5 on the season and is sure to move up the rankings. Blaze now has several ranked wins on the year including a win from November over 2023 All-American Ed Scott from NC State. Being just a true freshman, we can expect Blaze to continue to improve and challenge for All-American honors this year at 157 pounds.
