Match notes for the wrestling dual between Iowa and Northwestern on January 28, 2024.

125: #6 Drake Ayala, Iowa vs Massey Odiotti, Northwestern
Ayala should be the big favorite here for the Hawkeyes against true freshman Massey Odiotti who's only 3-9 on the year. Right away Ayala gets in on a single leg and has Odiotti up in the year and...Odiotti hits a BACKFLIP to work his way out of the single leg. Fun way to start the dual! Ayala gets back to his lefty single and this time works for the takedown and gets the early 3-0 lead. Now Ayala's playing the catch-and-release game - Ayala secured 2 more takedowns in 5 seconds to take a 9-2 lead. Ayala cuts again and goes head outside for another takedown then cuts and releases and secures his 5th takedown of the period to take a 15-4 lead into the second period.
Ayala goes down in the second, gets an escape in about 15 seconds, and immediately fires off a single, and finishes quickly to take a 19-4 lead and earns a tech fall!

133: Cullan Schriever, Iowa vs Patrick Adams, Northwestern
Cullan Schriever takes the mat for the Hawkeyes with Brody Teske wrestling up at 141 pounds today. Schriever and Adams are feeling one another out to start the match - a lot of hand-fighting but no committed attacks. Now Schriever fires off a single-leg and fights through Adams' shin whizzer to finish on the edge of the mat to take a 3-0 lead. Schriever lets Adams up for the escapes and we'll take a short blood time break. After the break, Schriever gets to his single again and finishes fast for another takedown. Schriever gives Adams the escape and then Scriever takes a low-single and fights through for the takedown just in time and will get the takedown and take a 9-2 lead into the second.
We go neutral in the second and Scrhiever is rolling - secures 2 takedowns in the first 25 seconds and is now leading 15-4. Schriever coming forward hard and Adams able to throw him by for a takedown of his own but Schiever reverses and gets back to his offense now leading 20-9! Schriever gets one more takedown and it's 23-9 going into the third.
Schriever goes down to start the 3rds so if he gets an escape, he'll have the tech. And it only takes 7 seconds and Schriever wins - 24-9.

141: #18 (133) Brody Teske, Iowa vs Kolby McClain, Northwestern
Real Woods didn't travel with the team so Brody Teske takes the mat for the Hawkeyes at 141 pounds. The announcers just shared that Teske weighed in just under 133 pounds so he's definitely giving up size here.
Despite being the smaller wrestler, Teske is moving McClain all over the mat and controlling the ties. A lot of shots but McClain defends Teske's attacks two minutes into the match. Now, Teske gets a clean double and finishes for the takedown. Teske transitions almost immediately to a tilt and will take a 7-0 lead into the second period.
We'll go neutral to start the second and now McClain looks a little more offensive but takes an errant shot allowing Teske to run behind and extend his lead to 10-0. Teske gives up the escape and again McClain shoots but Teske runs behind for the takedown. Teske is able to lock up his cross-wrist tilt and gets a 4-count and closes out the match for a 17-1 tech fall win.

149: #14 Caleb Rathjen, Iowa vs Aiden Vandenbush, Northwestern
Both wrestlers are hand-fighting hard to start the match, Rathjen coming forward a little more than Vandenbush but Vandenbush doing a good job of staying in the fight. About a minute to go in the period and Rathjen gets to a single leg but Vandenbush uses a shin whizzer to defend and get a stalemate. Now Vandenbush gets a single, has it lifted, but Rathjen dive rolls through and is able to pass the leg to finish - Rathjen takes a 3-0 lead into the second period.
Vandenbush goes down in the second and earns a quick escape, it's 3-1 Rathjen leading. Now Rathjen fires off a slick head-outside single, Vandenbush tries to scramble through and Rathjen catches him on his back and gets the fall!

157: #2 Jared Franek, Iowa vs #22 Trevor Chumbley, Northwestern
This has the potential to be one of the best matches of the night - Franek and Chumbley wrestled at NCAAs last year with Franek winning a close, 5-3 bout. Expect a low-scoring match - maybe even overtime.
Pretty slow start to this match - especially considering the offense we saw in the first 4 bouts of the afternoon. At about a minute left in the period Franek gets in deep on a single, tries to go through the middle but Chumbley ties Franek up and defends for the stalemate. No other attacks in the first and it's 0-0 going into the second period.
Chumbley goes down and earns a quick escape to take a 1-0 lead. Franek fires off a single and Chumbley gets hit with a stall call, that's his first of the match and could come into play later in the bout. Hard hand-fighting but neither wrestler gets close to scoring as the second period comes to a close, Chumbley still leading 1-0.
Franek goes down to start the second and earns an escape in about 15 seconds - and we're all tied up at 1-1. Franek darts in but Chumbley does a great job of draping over the top and earns the stalemate - 1 minute to go and it's still 1-1. Now Franek gets in on a single - he's so close to finishing and even gets a neutral-danger swipe but Chumbley scrambles through and we're going to overtime! Franek was so close to finishing 2-3 times but Chumbley's defense is really tricky.
Start of the overtime and both wrestlers look fresh. Just over 45 seconds in and Franek times Chumbley's right food stepping forward perfectly and hits a clean low-single. Chumbley draped over the top but Franek finishes for the takedown and over time win, 4-1.

Back from the break and we've got another ranked matchup between Caliendo and Mayfield. 20 seconds in and Caliendo hits a slick boot scoot for the first takedown of the bout. Caliendo rides for 20 seconds and Mayfield earns the escape to make it 3-1. Caliendo is staying very offensive getting in a few shots but Mayfield able to defend fairly well. Now the pressure is just too much and Caliendo finishes quickly to go up 6-1. After an escape from Mayfield, it's 6-2 going into the second period.
Caliendo goes down to start the second and earns a quick escape. Now Caliendos rolling - fires off a few shots, gets a stall call against Mayfield, and earns a takedown. Caliendo has things figured out now, two quick takedowns to take a 17-5 lead. Another stall call and a takedown at the end of the second period - Caliendo wins by tech fall, 21-5.

174: #13 Patrick Kennedy, Iowa vs David Ferrante, Northwestern
Ferrante shoots right at the start of the period and gets Kennedy's leg up in the air but Kennedy gets his foot back on the mat and Ferrante isn't able to finish. Now Kennedy is coming forward controlling the ties but not firing off any attacks. Now Kennedy uses his pressure and gets to a clean single leg - Ferrante kicked over a few times but in the end, Kennedy finishes for the takedown and takes a 3-0 lead into the second period.
Kennedy goes down to start the second period and quickly earns an escape to hold a 4-0 lead now. A lot of pressure and hand-fighting but not much offense for either wrestler and the score remains 4-0 going into the third period.
Ferrante goes down in the third and Kennedy lets up him to make it 4-1. Now Kennedy picks up his offense and gets in deep on a double to make it 7-1. After riding for about 20 seconds, Kennedy cuts Ferrante and is working for the major. Kennedy hits a clean low-single and finishes quickly for the takedown. Kennedy will ride-out and win by major decision, 11-2.

184: Aiden Riggins, Iowa vs #23 Troy Fisher, Northwestern
Troy Fisher's the favorite here against Riggins - Fisher's a 2-time national qualifier and finished in the round of 16 at last year's NCAA Tournament.
Despite being the underdog, it's Riggins in on the early single-leg and he finishes to go up 3-0. Fisher escapes to make it 3-1 after Riggins rode for just over 10 seconds. Now Fisher is coming forward strong but isn't able to get to any offense and it's 3-1 going into the second period.
Fisher goes down to start the period and immediately escapes to close the gap to 3-2. Fisher is definitely showing some urgency and taking multiple attacks but he's not able to get to Riggins' legs. It's still 3-2 at the end of the second.
Riggins goes underneath in the final period and gets the escape in just 3 seconds. Fisher fires off a few attacks and Riggins looked to reattack but Fisher catches him in a front headlock. Fisher goes head-in-the hole but Riggins able to get out of bounds and avoids giving up the score. Just 45 seconds to go and Fisher gets to a single-leg but Riggins defends with a whizzer and uses his rubber-knee to get a potentially dangerous call. 31 seconds to go and Fisher's coming forward with a lot of attacks - Riggins defends them all and they go out of bounds with 7 seconds to go. One last attack for Fisher but Riggins defends and holds on to win 4-2.

197: #13 Zach Glazier, Iowa vs #27 Evan Bates, Northwestern
Nice ankle pick 10 seconds in for Glazier and he finishes for three. Bates works up to his feet and earns the escape to make it 3-1. Both wrestlers seem content to hand-fight for a minute until Glazier gets in deep on a single but Bates defends long enough for the stalemate. Glazier gets in on a single at the end of the period but Bates scrambles through and defends to keep the score 3-1 going into the second period.
Glazier goes down to start the period and gets the escape to make it 4-1. Glazier doing a good job of coming forward and earns a stall call against Bates. Glazier gets in on a single at the edge of the mat but Bates goes into the split position and his foot hits the gym floor to go out of bounds. Off the restart Glazier gets back to his single and finishes in the middle of the mat to extend his lead to 7-1 going into the final period.
Bates goes down to start the third but Glazier looks committed to the ride and stays on top for over a minute to build 1:11 of riding time before Bates earns the escape. Now Glazier needs a takedown for the major and he gets it with just under thirty seconds. Glazier will ride out and win, 11-2.

Ben Kueter is taking the mat for just his second time in an Iowa singlet! Jessen gets in on a single-leg early but Kueter scrambles through to a cradle and takes it over for a fall in just 44 seconds! Kueter puts the exclamation point on Iowa's shutout dual win - really impressive stuff from Kueter.
