Michigan true freshman Sergio Lemley registered perhaps the biggest stunner of the college wrestling season to date, beating returning #1 Real Woods.
Michigan true freshman Sergio Lemley registered perhaps the biggest stunner of the college wrestling season to date, putting returning NCAA finalist Real Woods on his back twice Friday night in a 14-2 major decision.
Lemley, ranked 19th at 141 pounds, opened the scoring by reversing the top-ranked Iowa senior to his back for a six-point move early in the second period and then cradled Woods to his back for seven more in the final seconds to ignite the Crisler Center crowd.
The victory boosted Lemley’s record to 12-4 on the season. It was his first career win over a top-10 opponent.
For Woods, it was just his second loss in two seasons with the Hawkeyes. His other defeat occurred last March in the NCAA finals when he got reversed to his back in the second period and suffered a 6-4 loss to Northern Colorado’s Andrew Alirez.
