Match Notes: Second Round | Quarterfinals | Semis + Bloodround | Medal Round | Finals
We're at the 2024 NCAA D1 Wrestling Championships, and we'll have an account of all the action here for you in real time!
Have some time to kill before the wrestling starts? Might I recommend spending an hour watching the latest FloSports Original: Spencer & Austin? I'm admittedly biased but in my humble opinion it rules.
Where Are Brackets?
I'm hoping you came here for the live blog but if you just want the brackets I understand as well. We all crave brackets. Here is the link to the D1 NCAA Championship event page on Trackwrestling. Brackets are very easy to find from there. Sweet sweet brackets.
What About the Schedule?
Sure, right here.
Thursday, March 21
Session 1 - 12:00 pm (Pigtails & Round of 32)
Session 2 - 7:00 pm (Round of 16 & Consolations)
Friday, March 22
Session 3 - 12:00 pm (Quarterfinals & Consolations)
Session 4 - 8:00 pm (Championship Semifinals & Round of 12)
Saturday, March 23
Session 5 - 11:00 am (Placing Matches)
Session 6 - 7:00 pm (Championship Finals)
Before we begin with the pigtails (or the round of 64 for you sticklers) we need to update the 141-pound bracket. We will do need to do anything, the good people at Trackwrestling and the NCAA already took care of it for us. But sadly, Vince Cornella of Cornell will be unable to compete at NCAAs. That means first alternate Jacob Brya of Northern Illinois will get the #33 seed and everyone moves up a spot until the #24 seed, which was previously occupied by Cornella.
‼️HE'S IN‼️
— NIU Wrestling (@NIUWrestling) March 20, 2024
Redshirt Freshman Jacob Brya becomes the 129th NIU Huskie to compete at the NCAA National Championship.
Brya enters as the 33rd seed at 141lbs 👏#WorkLikeADog pic.twitter.com/JVGcczd8GJ
Hopefully there are no more scratches but we'll keep our eyes peeled!
We're a half hour from first whistle is unfortunately more bad news. The brackets giveth and the brackets taketh away, and according to the brackets Jacob Brya is not participating in this year's NCAA Championship. So 141 will be a 32-man bracket. Nine pigtails still come in a little less than 30 minutes!
Pigtails
Winners of these #32 vs #33 seed matches still have a long round ahead of them, but it is nice to see programs that typically don't see a lot of wins at the NCAA tournament get a chance to have their arm raised the Big Dance.
For instance, not only did Long Island University have their first national qualifier in program history, but they also picked up their first win, as Anthony 'Ant Man' D'Alesio beat Tomas Booker of App State 10-8 at 184-pounds. LIU-Brooklyn had a qualifier back in the 1970s and LIU-Post has had a lot of success at the DII level but never had the LIU Sharks (the new athletic department that was created when LIU-B and LIU-P merged their campuses) had a qualifier before. Congrats to the Sharks!
Additionally, the Keydets of VMI picked up a rare NCAA win, when Dyson Dunham defeated Indiana's Cayden Rooks at 133.
Round of 32
125 Pounds
125 has been absolutely insane this year so we're getting some insane first round matchups on account of all the insane seeds, which are due to all the insane regular season results.

- Iowa's Brody Teske get's a big 12-4 win over Derrick Cardinal of South Dakota State and the Iowa fans show their appreciation.

- Kair Orine of NCSU has Jacob Van Dee of Nebraska in an excellent round 2 matchup.
- Defending 133lb NCAA champ and 61kg UWW gold medalist Vito Arujau wins. he'll have Campbell's Dom Zaccone next.

- UPSET ALERT - Minnesota's #22 Vance VomBaur gets one back for his teammate Tyler Wells when defeats #6 Cael Happel of UNI.
- Penn State's Beau Bartlett has Kal Miller of Maryland in a stereotypically low scoring bout. It's 1-1 in the third. Bartlett gets the takedown in the final seconds after a lengthy scramble for a head-fought 4-1 win.
- #13 Tom Crook and #4 Ryan Jack won for an all-ACC Jack v Crook matchup in the second round (not to be confused with Jack Crook, Tom's brother who wrestles at Harvard and also qualified at this tournament).
149 Pounds
- #1 seed Ridge Lovett of Nebraska has a quick takedown over Rutgers' Michael Cetta and the pigtails have now all received the necessary wait time. All the top seeds can start the bouts with the rest of their division. Lovett pins in the first period!
- It's Miller Time as Ethen Miller, older brother of Kal Miller, who is currently entangled with Beau Bartlett, has Willie McDougald of Oklahoma.
- Iowa State's fan-favorite Casey Swiderski gets a 2-1 victory over Army's Matthew Williams to give the Cyclone faithful something to cheer about.
- The aforementioned Jack Crook has the high-flying Austin Gomez of Michigan (by way of Wisconsin by way of Iowa State). Gomez leads 6-2 in the first. Gomez eventually takes it after a bunch of points go on the board, 18-12.
- Ty Watters of West Virginia completes an impressive 19-4 tech fall over Logan Gioffre of Missouri.
- Penn State's true frosh phenom, Tyler Kasak, a 141-pounder who was pressed into service at 149 after teammate Shayne Van Ness went down for the season with an injury, has former All-American Jaden Abas of Stanford for a first round opponent. Abas got an escape and takedown in the second to lead 4-1 in the third. Abas plays the edge and gives up a stall point but does enough to win, 4-2.
- Big rivalry match between Iowa's Caleb Rathken and Oklahoma State's Jordan Williams. It's a great bout that goes back and forth, with the score knotted up 5-5 deep in the third. There's a wild scramble in the final seconds before Williams whips Rathen over in a cradle and secures a takedown and nearfall for the seven point win. Very dramatic, much to the approval of the Cowboy faithful in attendance.
- Virginia Tech's Caleb Henson has no problems in his tech fall over Alek Martin of SDSU.
- Multiple-time All-American Kyle Parco survives a determined Finn Solomon of Pitt, 5-4.
- Big Ten rivalry renewed as Dylan D'Emilio defats Wisconsin's Joey Zargo.
157 Pounds
- Levi Hains goes immediately to word on the Buckeyes' Isaac Wilcox. The Nittany Lion has a 6-1 lead in the first minute. And after a totally dominant seven minutes of wrestling, Haines wins by tech-fall, 17-2, with the RT point being the point that gave Levi the tech.
- Rematch of a regular season bout between wrestlers that both grew up in Columbia, Missouri, the Tigers' multiple-time All-American Brock Mauller has Oklahoma State's Teague Travis. Tavis won their dual meet bout at Missouri. And Travis wins the NCAA match as well as Oklahoma State continues their impressive first round.
- Cornell's true frosh fantastico Meyer Shapiro jumps out to a 9-2 lead after the first period.

- Jacori Teemer gets a 7-3 win over Matty Bianchi of Little Rock to score some advancement points for the Sun Devils.
165 Pounds
- Defending champ Keegan O'Toole wastes no time getting a first period pin and the 165-pound weight class's first round is under way.

- UPSET ALERT: Bucknell's #28 Noah Mulvaney came back from a 9-3 first period deficit to beat Navy's #12 Andrew Cerniglia. Second period nearfall plus a reversal and riding time in the third period gave the Bison freshman the 10-9 win. Mulvaney will have #6 seed Michael Caliendo of Iowa next.
174 Pounds
- Defending three-time champs and #9 seed (on account of the two, 1 second injury defaults at Big Tens) Carter Starocci takes the mat against Minnesota's Andrew Sparks. Starocci was injured in the last dual meet to the season but said he was 100% at the press conference yesterday. Staorcci shoots first but Sparks scrambles and scores the first takedown. Starocci scrambles from bottom and now he's got Sparks on his back. Nearly a pin but still an 8-3 lead for Starocci, who appears determined to not let his right leg be a factor at this tournament. Staorcci will make it a 12-6 official decision after two more periods of wrestling.

- UPSET ALERT: #32 Alex Cramer of Central Michigan by way of the cowardly Old Dominion defeats #14 Gaven Sax of North Dakota State.
- UPSET ALERT Iowa Patrick Kennedy fought valiantly but North Carolina's Tyler Eischens had just enough valiance himself to win 9-7.

- UPSET ALERT: Wisconsin's #21 Shane Liegel, who started his career in Division III, defeated #8 Bennet Berge of SDSU 9-1.
- The Columbia Lions' Aaron Ayzerov advances with a win over EIWA rival (at least until next season when the Ivies splinter off and start their own wrestling conference) Jacob Nolan 10-0. Ayzerov will face the #4 seed Trey Munoz of Oregon State in the next round.
- Virginia Tech's TJ Stewart is keeping his hot streak going with a pinfall in the first round.
- Jaden Bullock of Michigan and Brian Soldano of Rutgers were in a predictably funky match when Bullock secured a fall. Unfortunatley Soldano appeared to suffer a concussion in the final flurry. Hopefully he will be okay to continue but more importantly, we hope he is just okay physically, period. The medical team wisely takes their time putting Soldano on a stretcher and takes him off the mat. Hoping for the best for Brian and his family.
- UPSET ALERT: #15 Chris Foca of Cornell was in command of his bout with #29 James Conway of Franklin & Marshall until the third period when Foca got hit for three stall calls and then gave up a last second takedown which gave Conway the 5-4 win. Conway has Oklahoma State's Dustin Plott, who advanced via tech fall.

285 Pounds

Nevills holds a 7-6 lead after one period as we pause to wrap up Nevills' bleeding head. Both wrestlers scored takedowns and nearfall in the first three minutes. Hendrickson keeps his cool and survives the scare. The Falcon battles back for an 11-8 victory

That's all the live blogging I have in me for this session. But I'll be back for the second session tonight as we see who makes the quarterfinals and who will see their tournament dreams come to an end on Day 1.
Too many storylines to summarize in the final paragraphs. Which is why this tournament rules so much. Tug on any thread found in all 10 brackets and watch countless tories unravel. Sorry for all the typos, see you tonight!
