Amit Elor missed the 2020 Olympic Trials by a day. The Walnut Creek, California, native was born on January 1, 2004. She would have met the minimum age requirement if she had been born a day earlier.
Not to worry. The 20-year-old made up for it by dominating the World as a teenager. Elor made eight senior and age-level World teams over the past three years, bringing home eight gold medals.
Elor typically competes at 72 kilograms but will drop to 68 (nearly nine pounds lighter) at the Olympic Trials. She secured a spot in the best-of-three finals by qualifying the weight at the Pan-Am Olympic Qualifying tournament in February.
Based on recent results and her track record of dominating the competition, it seems likely that Elor will represent Team USA at the Olympics. Her punishing style utilizes a two-on-one and an underhook to win matches.
Amit Elor At The World Championships
Forrest Molinari has the best shot on paper to compete with Elor. Her high-octane pace and colorful interviews make her a fan favorite. She has made three Senior World teams, winning a bronze medal in 2021.
Aine Drury might be the surprise of the tournament. The King University star was ahead of Iowa’s Reese Larramendy, 5-4, in the second period before getting pinned in the National Collegiate Women’s Wrestling Championships finals.
Both had impressive showings at Women’s Nationals over the weekend, with Larremendy dominating the field to make the U20 World team and Drury winning U23 Nationals, both at 65 kg. Drury posted two wins over Olympic Trials qualifier Alara Boyd in the U23 finals. Boyd has made four age-level World teams and won two medals.
Alexandria Glaude (68 kg) and Brookly Hays (72 kg) are the current U.S. National team and will be factors at this weight. Glaude fell to former McKendree teammate Emma Bruntil at last year’s World Team Trials Challenge Tournament, and Hays pinned her former Augsburg teammate Nina Makem in straight matches in the U23 National finals after dropping a 3-2 decision in the first round.
Solin Piearcy looked good at the 2022 World Cup and will be a tough opponent if she’s on her game.
The expectation, though, is that Elor will make the team. Her recent success at all levels makes her the favorite domestically and internationally.
