Mamedov Accepts Invite, UWW Updates Olympic Qualifier List
UWW announced the replacement bids after eight more neutral athletes declined their invites to the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
UWW announced the replacement bids after eight more neutral athletes declined their invites to the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
One weight class that UWW did not need a replacement for is 65kg in men's freestyle, as Shamil Mamedov, a bronze medalist at the 2023 World Championships, was cleared to compete in Paris as a neutral athlete and has accepted his invite, according to the International Olympic Committee.
Russia and Belarus were suspended from the Olympics following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February of 2022. The IOC allowed for athletes from those countries to compete at the Paris Games as neutral athletes provided they pass strict eligibility requirements.
Athletes from Russia and Belarus qualified a total of 27 Olympic weights across all three styles, however, the IOC cleared just 17 wrestlers to compete as individual neutral athletes. Several of those athletes subsequently declined their invites. UWW had previously announced which countries would qualify for the Olympics in those vacated spots.
Now, with eight more neutral athletes declining their invites, UWW has announced eight more countries who have earned Olympic bids.
Below are the countries and the presumed starters, though keep in mind that final rosters in men's and women's freestyle have not yet been announced.
Men's Freestyle
57kg: Kazakhstan (Meirambek Kartbay)
86kg: Ukraine (Vasyl Mykhailov)
125kg: Ukraine (Oleksandr Khotsianivskyi)
Greco-Roman
87kg: Denmark (Turpal Bisultanov)
97kg: Germany (Lucas Lazogianis)
Women's Freestyle
53kg: Germany (Annika Wendle)
62kg: France (Ameline Douarre)
68kg: Ukraine (Manola Skobelska)
Just two wrestlers from Belarus or Russia (Abubakar Khaslakhanau of Belarus at 97kg in Greco-Roman and Shamil Mamdeov of Russia at 65kg in men's freestyle) have accepted their bids to compete in the Olympics as neutral athletes.
The IOC published a list of all the neutral athletes cleared to compete and whether or not those athletes accepted those bids here.
