Olympic Gold Medalist and two-time NCAA wrestling champion Gable Steveson’s path to the NFL took a detour when the 24-year-old athletic unicorn was part of the final Buffalo Bills cuts on Aug. 27.

Steveson, who didn’t play football during his historic college career, was part of the roster cutdown by the Bills, which needed to get to 53 players on their roster before the season starts next week.

It’s been a whirlwind year for Steveson. The star made a brief return to wrestling in 2023 at the U.S. Open Wrestling Championship while simultaneously being under contract for the WWE. Steveson dominated at the Open and later that summer made Team USA for the 2023 World Wrestling Championships at Final X.

But he opted not to compete at the World Championships and focus on his professional career.

Steveson’s pro wrestling career was put on hold in May when he was released from his contract.

He didn’t wait long to find a new career path. Steveson signed a three-year contract with the Bills on May 31 despite having never played the sport. He tried to make the perennial playoff team as a defensive tackle and made it to the final day of cuts.

Just because Steveson didn’t make the final cut, he will have opportunities in the sport, according to various NFL reports. Steveson could join the Bills practice squad or join another team’s practice squad.
