Team USA & Japan Tied In First After Day 1

Team USA got off to a great start on day one of U23 Worlds and are tied atop the leaderboard with Japan. Sage Mortimer and Yelena Makoyed scored the bulk of Team USA’s points by making the finals and earning 20 team points a piece. Amani Jones lost in the semifinals but will wrestle for bronze and is guaranteed 10 points. Only one wrestler from Japan made the finals on day 1 but they had 4 total semifinalists compared to Team USA’s 3. It’s also worth noting that Brooklyn Hays is alive for a bronze medal and will wrestle a repechage match on Thursday morning for a chance to wrestle for bronze.

*Russia and Belarus are not in the official team rankings because they are competing as “Individual Neutral Athletes.” However, we chose to include them in the above standings to show how those countries are performing at U17 Worlds.

What’s Next For The Team Race?

Half of the women’s freestyle weights will begin their tournament with Elena Ivaldi (53 kg), Sofia Macaluso (57 kg), Macey Kilty (62 kg), Adaugo Nwachukwu (65 kg), and Kylie Welker (72 kg) all taking the mat Thursday for Team USA. On top of that, all of the medal matches from the first day of U23 worlds will be wrestled on Thursday with medal matches beginning at noon (ET). That means there is a lot of wrestling left to take place and Team USA will have to outpace Japan in the remaining five weights to win a team title. We’ll continue to update this article at the end of each day to keep you informed on the latest in the team race.
