Top Matches To Watch

141: Ryder Block, Iowa vs Jason Miranda, Stanford

While this is the only match of the day that doesn’t include at least one ranked wrestler (that’s if Jacori Teemer wrestles at 157), it’s one of the most intriguing to me. Ryder Block passed the test in his first ever college match against Nash Singleton last week, but was losing until the last 30 seconds. Was that the real Ryder Block, or was that Block dusting off the cobwebs? Jason Miranda is a similar level opponent to Singleton.

157: #1 Jacori Teemer/Caleb Rathjen, Iowa vs Grigor Cholakyan, Stanford

157 is interesting for one main reason - will we see Jacori Teemer? Teemer did not make the trip with the team to Oregon State. Instead it was Caleb Rathjen for the Hawkeyes. After the dual when asked if Hawk fans could see Teemer in the lineup in the future Brands responded, “Yeah. Absolutely… Teemer’s in Iowa City. He’s fine. We’re going to put the best team on the mat from week to week to week.”

165: #2 Michael Caliendo, Iowa vs #8 Hunter Garvin, Stanford

The highest-ranked matchup of the night is also a homecoming for Hunter Garvin. The Stanford sophomore is a 2022 graduate of Iowa City West High School. He’s also a bit of a wildcard on the mat with big move potential. Combine that with Michael Caliendo’s high pace, and I’m expecting a high scoring match. Caliendo will be a heavy favorite. He won 7-4 the last and only time the two have met.
