Oklahoma State vs Oregon State Preview & Predictions

This dual can be viewed live on FloWrestling and check out the below article for a full preview with predictions for this incredible dual.

Oklahoma State vs Oregon State Projected Lineups

125: #6 Troy Spratley, Oklahoma State vs #10 Maximo Renteria, Oregon State
133: #33 Cael Hughes/Reece Witcraft, Oklahoma State vs Damion Elliott, Oregon State
141: #12 Tagen Jamison, Oklahoma State vs Nash Singleton, Oregon State
149: #21 Carter Young, Oklahoma State vs Victor Jacinto/Ayden Garver, Oregon State
157: #12 Teague Travis, Oklahoma State vs #30 Ethan Stiles, Oregon State
165: #6 Cameron Amine, Oklahoma State vs Kekana Fouret, Oregon State
174: #4 Dean Hamiti, Oklahoma State vs #32 Sean Harman, Oregon State
184: #3 Dustin Plott, Oklahoma State vs TJ McDonnell, Oregon State
197: #20 Luke Surber/Cody Merrill, Oklahoma State vs #5 Trey Munoz, Oregon State
285: #2 Wyatt Hendrickson, Oklahoma State vs Brett Mower, Oregon State

125: #6 Troy Spratley, Oklahoma State vs #10 Maximo Renteria, Oregon State

Spratley vs Renterio will be one of the best matches of the night and will be a test for both wrestlers. In an incredibly turbulent year at 125 pounds, Spratley was one of the most consistent wrestlers in the country but finished just one match shy of All-American honors. Despite the disappointing end to his year, Spratley peaked in the rankings at #6 and accumulated notable wins in the regular season over eventual national champion Richard Figueroa and All-Americans Luke Stanich and Tanner Jordan. Spratley is a NCAA title contender this year and should be considered a considerable favorite going into this match against Renteria.

Troy Spratley shares on the changes at Oklahoma State and the expectations for the coming year:

null

Despite being the underdog, Renteria should be a formidable opponent for Spratley. Renteria was Brandon Kaylor’s backup last season but he went 6-0 during the year while recording a victory over eventual national champion Richard Figueroa, 9-5. On top of that, Renteria is off to a great start this year with wins over Iowa’s Joey Cruz and North Dakota State’s Tristan Daugherty. This match against Spratley could tell us how legitimate of a contender Renteria is this year at 125.

Prediction: Spratley wins by decision

133: #33 Cael Hughes/Reece Witcraft, Oklahoma State vs Damion Elliott, Oregon State

The matchup at 133 pounds has a lot of intrigue surrounding it because Oklahoma State has a roster battle here between Hughes and Witcraft. Hughes is coming off winning a title at the Michigan State Open and was the #9 ranked overall recruit coming out of the class of 2023. Witcraft is a sixth-year senior, a two-time NCAA qualifier, and started for the Cowboys in 2020 and 2023. Who will the Cowboys roll out at 133? We’re not sure yet but whoever takes the mat on Sunday could tell us a lot about who we can expect in the 133 spot for the rest of the year.

For Oregon State, Damion Elliot will take the mat at 133 pounds and has had limited action in the starting lineup for the Beavers. He’s 0-2 on the year and has only wrestled 11 total Division 1 matches in his college career. Elliot wrestled 2-time national qualifier Kyle Burrwick tough last week and he’ll look to do the same on Sunday against either Hughes or Witcraft.

Prediction: Hughes wins by decision

141: #12 Tagen Jamison, Oklahoma State vs Nash Singleton, Oregon State

Similar to his teammate Spratley, Tagen Jamison was one of the best wrestlers in his weight to not earn All-American honors last year. During the 2023-24 season, Jamison rose to #6 in the rankings at 141 pounds and recorded notable wins over Brock Hardy, Anthony Echemendia, Sergio Lemley, Cole Matthews, and several other highly-ranked wrestlers. There was initial speculation that Jamison was going to wrestle 149 pounds this season but he’s coming off a title performance at the Michigan State open where he bonused his way through the tournament with 1 pin and 3 major decisions. Still Jamison is a big 141-pounder and seeing how he performs off the scale will be interesting on Sunday.

Nash Singleton will be an underdog but that doesn’t mean it will be an easy match for Jamison. Singleton started last year for the Beavers at 149 pounds and though he failed to qualify for NCAAs, he had multiple quality performances throughout the year. Singleton, just a freshman last year, defeated eventual All-American Quinn Kinner, national qualifier Isaiah Delgado, and placed 6th at a tough 2023 CKLV. Singleton is 1-1 on the year with a tech fall win over North Dakota State’s Gideon Cole and a close, 5-4, loss to Iowa’s Ryder Block. We should expect Singleton to be competitive against Jamison and no one should be surprised if Singleton makes this a close one or even comes out on top for the win.

Prediction: Jamison wins by decision

149: #21 Carter Young, Oklahoma State vs Victor Jacinto/Ayden Garver, Oregon State

Carter Young will likely make his return to the starting lineup for the Cowboys and is notably bumping up to 149 pounds after qualifying for the NCAA Tournament twice at 141 pounds in 2022 and 2023. Young has had quality wins over Casey Swiderski, Cael Happel, and Jake Bergeland but hasn’t yet broken through at the NCAA Tournament.

Both Jacinto and Garver are relatively inexperienced in college but have shown signs that they could be dangerous competitors. Jacinto wrestled 4-time All-American Parco to a close, 5-1 decision loss in the opening dual of the year. Garver is coming off winning a title at the Mike Clock Open last week and also majored Oklahoma State’s 149-pound backup last year, Cutter Sheets. Whether it’s Jacinto or Garver against Young, this match should be really competitive and could surprise a lot of people on Sunday.

Prediction: Young wins by decision

157: #12 Teague Travis, Oklahoma State vs #30 Ethan Stiles, Oregon State

Ethan Stiles was one of the bright spots for Oregon State in their opening dual against Iowa. Stiles put on an impressive performance in his 12-3 major decision win over Iowa’s Caleb Rathjen. That result pushed Stiles into the #30 spot in the rankings and makes him a wrestler to watch out for early on this season at 157 pounds.

Though Stiles passed the test against Rathjen, Teague Travis is another level and should be considered the favorite on Sunday. Travis was a national qualifier last year for the Cowboys at 157 pounds and won two matches at the NCAA Tournament. Travis’ best performances last year came in his wins over All-Americans Brock Mauller and Ed Scott. Travis is a darkhorse All-American contender coming into this year and the matchup against Stiles has the potential to be the bout of the night.

Prediction: Stiles wins by decision

165: #6 Cameron Amine, Oklahoma State vs Kekana Fouret, Oregon State

165 marks the meat of Oklahoma State’s lineup and has 4 wrestlers of the last 5 ranked in the top 6. Amine is also the first of three big-name transfers for Oklahoma State and will be a big storyline to watch in this dual and throughout the season. Amine is a three-time All-American who finished in the round of 12 last season. He’s always been a more defensive wrestler who tends to wrestle close matches. Will the change in scenery be a good one for Amine? Fouret should be a good litmus test to answer this question. Amine is a big favorite and should be able to push for bonus points against Fouret who was teched by Michael Caliendo in the opening match of the year.

Cam Amine breaks down his transition to Oklahoma State:

Prediction: Amine wins by major decision

174: #4 Dean Hamiti, Oklahoma State vs #32 Sean Harman, Oregon State

Two-time All-American Dean Hamiti is another transfer who will make his Cowboy debut this weekend. Hamiti is routinely one of the most exciting wrestlers in the country and accumulates bonus point wins at an incredible rate. Harman is a tough transfer from Missouri and even defeated Dustin Plott in the 2021-22 season (5-4). Despite that, Harman might have a hard time keeping up with Hamiti’s offense and there's a good chance Hamiti wins this one with bonus points.

Hamiti talks about his move up to 174 and the move to Oklahoma State:

null

Prediction: Hamiti wins by major decision

184: #3 Dustin Plott, Oklahoma State vs TJ McDonnell, Oregon State

Dustin Plott is coming off the best season of his career where he finished as NCAA runner-up while compiling a 31-4 record. On top of that, Plott was incredibly dominant last season recording 25 bonus point victories - 8 majors, 9 techs, 8 pins. Plott should roll to victory on Sunday against redshirt freshman McDonnell who was teched in his opening match of the season against Gabe Arnold.

Dustin Plott talks about the improvements he's made over the past year:

null

Prediction: Plott wins by tech fall

197: #20 Luke Surber/Cody Merrill, Oklahoma State vs #5 Trey Munoz, Oregon State

The match at 197 pounds between Surber and Munoz has the potential to be the match of the dual. Munoz is coming up from 184 pounds where he was a two-time All-American and looks to be a title contender this year at 197. Meanwhile, Surber is a big 197 with wins over multiple All-Americans in his career and even qualified for NCAAs at 285 in 2022. Munoz has some high-powered offense on his feet but don’t be surprised if Surber keeps this match interesting.

Though it’s unlikely, there’s a chance Oklahoma State throws out true freshman and blue chip recruit Cody Merrill at 197 against Munoz. Merrill has some amazing neutral offense and is coming off a title performance at the Michigan State Open. Oklahoma State could still keep Merrill’s redshirt intact even if he wrestles Munoz so this might be the perfect time to see where Merrill stacks up against the best in the country at 197.

Highlights of Trey Munoz's win in the 3rd place match at the 2024 NCAA Tournament:

null

Prediction: Munos wins by decision

285: #2 Wyatt Hendrickson, Oklahoma State vs Brett Mower, Oregon State

Wyatt Hendrickson is the final big-time transfer for Oklahoma State and he should be considered a huge favorite to win by bonus against Mower. 18 of Hendrickson’s 27 wins last year came by pin and Mower was pinned in 5 of his 18 matches. Mower’s going to have his hands full and we should expect to see Hendrickson end this one early.

Wyatt Hendrickson talks about how he's having fun at Oklahoma State:

null

Prediction: Hendrickson wins by pin

Final Dual Score Prediction: Oklahoma State 31, Oregon State 6

Even though we have this being a big win for Oklahoma State, Oregon State has the potential to pull off several upsets and this could be far closer than what we've predicted. 125, 141, and 149 are all matches where we wouldn’t be all that shocked to see the Beavers pull off an upset. It will take a remarkable performance for them to win at every one of those weights but they are wrestling at home and this is college wrestling. That means anything can happen when these two teams take the mat on Sunday in Corvallis!
