Ranked Men’s Wrestlers

*I don’t expect all of these athletes to compete (ie Northern Iowa doesn’t normally bring their top guys). However, there will also be a good amount of solid freshmen and backups competing.

Biggest Storylines To Follow

Who Will Earn Iowa’s Starting 174 lb Spot?

Patrick Kennedy and Nelson Brands have been splitting time at 174 lbs for the Hawkeyes so far this season. Brands was an All-American for Iowa in 2023, but has gotten off to a slow start to the season dropping a match to Stanford freshman Lorenzo Norman. Kennedy is 2-0 with two tech falls including over Aiden Riggins in the Cy-Hawk dual.

How Good Is Angelo Ferrari?

We know Angelo Ferrari is really good. The true freshman Hawkeye was the #2 overall recruit coming out of high school and is currently 6-0 with an 8-2 win over #16 Evan Bockman of Iowa State. But will he be ready to contend for a national title whenever he is put into the starting lineup? That’s what we could find out this weekend. I don’t expect to see Parker Keckeisen, and I don’t expect Ferrari and Gabe Arnold to compete if they see each other in the bracket, but I do expect Bennett Berge and Max McEnelly to be there. If Ferrari can pass those two tests, he’s a title contender next year.

Will Gable Steveson Compete?

While the Gophers are bringing most of their starting lineup, Gable Steveson is in a league of his own and does what he wants. He’s 3-0 on the year so far. I wouldn’t be surprised if he competes or doesn’t compete.

Is Isaiah Salazar A Title Contender At 197?

Isaiah Salazar has steadily improved during his career at Minnesota. While competing at 184 lbs, he went from a national qualifier to the bloodround to 6th place last year. Now he’s up at 197 and 7-0 so far on the year. There’s no bigger test than #1 Stephen Buchanan.

NCAA #1 Iowa vs NAIA #1 Life

Iowa is a heavy favorite to repeat as Soldier Salute team champions, but they’ve got a formidable opponent in Life. Last year Iowa won it with 223 points while Life took 2nd with 193.5 points. The two met in a dual on November 9th this year with Iowa winning 30-14.
