Match Notes: Iowa Wrestling vs Ohio State

The undefeated #2 Iowa Hawkeyes hosted #4 Ohio State in Carver-Hawkeye arena on Saturday, January 25 in an incredible dual. See the article below for a full recap of each match of the dual.

125: #29 Joey Cruz, Iowa vs #12 Brendan McCrone, Ohio State

1st period: Cruz gets in cleanly on a right side single leg about a minute in but McCrone defends by draping over the top. Cruz can't get past McCrone's defense and the ref calls a stalemate. Cruz fires off another single leg but this time he attacks the left side and is in a much better position to finish. Cruz captures the other leg and secures the takedown with 45 seconds to go in the first. After a quick escape by McCrone, Cruz gets right back in on the leg and almost finishes but time runs out and Cruz holds a 3-1 lead going into the second.

2nd period: Cruz chooses neutral in the second period and gets right back to his attacks finishing quickly to extend his lead to 6-1. Cruz cuts McCrone for the escape but this time it's McCrone who attacks - he almost finishes but Cruz defends long enough for the stalemate. The pace slows at the end of the second period and it's 6-2 going into the third.

3rd period: McCrone chooses top in the third and immediately starts to attack with a leg in and a cross-face cradle. Cruz is called for stalling and hit again to give up a point with 30 seconds to go in the third. McCrone continues to attack on top and Cruz is called for stalling again but there isn't enough time left for McCrone to get anything going - Cruz gets the big 6-5 upset win.

Final: Joey Cruz, Iowa dec. Brendan McCrone, Ohio State- 6-5

133: Keyan Hernandez, Iowa vs Ben Davino, Ohio State

1st period:A little surprise for both teams with starters Drake Ayala and Nic Bouzakis out. Davino hits an early short-fireman's to get out to a quick lead and then immediately cuts Hernandez. Davino hits a smooth misdirection single to secure another takedown. After riding for about 40 seconds, Davion cuts Hernandez again and finishes the period with another takedown to hold a 9-2 lead at the end of the first period.

2nd period: Hernandez starts the second period down and Davino lets him go for the escape. Davino hits an arm drag for a takedown this time and then immediately gives Hernandez the escape. Davino goes back to his misdirect single to earn his fifth takedown of the match. Davino finishes the second period with a cross-wrist tilt to close the match out with a 19-4 tech fall.

Final: Ben Davino, Ohio State TF Keyan Hernandez, Iowa - 19-4

Team score: Iowa 3, Ohio State 5

141: #20 Ryder Block, Iowa vs #1 Jesse Mendez, Ohio State

1st period: Ryder Block is trying to set the tone early and he attacks with a high crotch but Mendez sits the corner and defends to force a stalemate. Now it's Mendez attacking and he finishes a single leg but his toes slide an inch off the mat and the match remains scoreless. Mendez hits a clean ankle pick and now he finishes for the takedown. Mendez lets Block go for the escape and it looks like Mendez is in a groove. He forces an underhook - Block tries to defend with a whizzer but Mendez is too strong and he earns another takedown. Mendez almost immediately locks up a cross-wrist tilt and closes the period with a 10-1 lead after earning four near fall.

2nd period: Mendez goes back to work earning two takedowns while only surrounding one escape. Mendez is up 16-2 and trying to work on top but Block is defending well. 

3rd period: Mendez goes neutral and earns the quick takedown to close out the match with a 19-2 tech fall win.

Final: Jesse Mendez, Ohio State TF Ryder Block, Iowa - 19-2

149: #4 Kyle Parco, Iowa vs #10 Dylan D’Emilio, Ohio State

1st period: D'Emilio fires off a high crotch early and gets his hands locked around Parco's legs. D'Emilo is working hard to finish but Parco defends well by sitting the corner and locking between D'Emilio's crotch. Parco works through the position and counters for a takedown to take a 3-0 lead. Parco shows off his riding ability and threatens a couple different times with his cross-wrist tilt. D'Emilio defends the tilt well and gets an escape with just 2 seconds remaining in the first period. Parco holds a 3-1 lead and 1:55 of riding time going into the second period.

2nd period: Parco goes down and earns a quick escape. Neither wrestler gets too close to scoring the rest of the period and Parco leads 4-1 at the end of the second period.

3rd period: D'Emilio goes down in the third period and earns an escape after about 30 seconds. It's 4-2 but Parco has riding time locked up so D'Emilio will need a takedown to force overtime. D'Emilio goes back to his head outside single but Parco sits the corner and scrambles through again to earn another counter takedown. Parco cuts D'Emilio looking for the major but there's not enough time left and it'll be a controlling 8-3 decision win for Parco.

Final: Jesse Mendez, Ohio State TF Ryder Block, Iowa - 19-2

Team score: Iowa 6, Ohio State 10

157: #1 Jacori Teemer, Iowa vs #19 Sammy Sasso, Ohio State

1st period: Slow pace to start this one - Sasso is doing a good job of getting to his underhook and marches Teemer out of bounds to earn a stall call. Sasso continues to come forward but Teemer counters with a lightning-quick outside trip for the takedown. Sasso earns an escape in under 10 seconds and the first period ends with Teemer leading 3-1.

2nd period: Sasso goes down in the second period and earns another quick escape to cut Teemer's lead to 3-2. Sasso continues to march forward and hits a clean low single. Teemer defends by draping over the top and the ref calls a stalemate to give them a fresh start. Sasso continues to move forward and Teemer is called for his second staling of the match to tie the score at 3. Almost immediately after the stall, Teemer fires off a straight-on double for his second takedown of the match. Sasso escapes again and it's 6-4 going into the third period. 

3rd period: Teemer starts the period down and escapes in about 20 seconds. Teemer blasts forward with another double and finishes for the takedown after a short scramble - Teemer leads 10-4 now. Teemer lets Sasso up with about a minute to go and Teemer needs a takedown for a major decision. Sasso gets a body lock but Teemer throws him off on the edge of the mat - Teemer won't get the major but will get the 10-5 victory. Teemer looks solid back in action after his 9-week layoff - great news for Hawkeye fans.

Final: Jacori Teemer, Iowa dec. Sammy Sasso, Ohio State - 10-5

165: #2 Mikey Caliendo, Iowa vs #13 Paddy Gallagher, Ohio State

1st period: Caliendo looks slightly more aggressive early and fires off some early attacks but Gallagher defends. Caliendo attacks with a post-double and finishes quickly for the takedown. Gallagher escapes after about 20 seconds but Caliendo converts on a single leg for another takedown - Caliendo leads 6-1 at the end of the first period. 

2nd period: Caliendo goes down in the second period and escapes in about 2 seconds. Caliendo maintains his pressure and Gallagher is called for stalling with about a minute to go in the second period. Caliendo almost gets another takedown but Gallagher defends to keep the score at 7-1 going into the third.

3rd period: Gallagher goes down in the final period and earns an escape after about 30 seconds. Caliendo leads 7-2 and holds just over a minute of riding time. Gallagher attacks but Caliendo hits a nice counter single leg for his third takedown of the match. Gallagher escapes but the riding time gives Caliendo the 11-3 major decision.

174: #5 Patrick Kennedy, Iowa vs #6 Carson Kharchla, Ohio State

1st period: Kharchla dives in on a single leg about 20 seconds into the match but Kennedy defends to force a stalemate. Hard handfight from both wrestlers but neither are forcing any shots. With about a minute to go in the first, Kharchla hits a clean left-side single leg, brings it off the match, and finishes for the takedown. Kennedy escapes and it's 3-1 Kharchla going into the second period.

>2nd period: Kharchla goes down in the second period and escapes after about 20 seconds to extend his lead to 4-1. Kennedy fires off an errant shot from the outside and Kharchla converts on a counter-attack and finishes quickly. Kennedy escapes to make it 7-2 at the end of the second period.

3rd period: Kennedy goes down in the third period and escapes to make it 7-3 - riding time is not a factor. Kennedy's coming forward furiously but is having trouble generating any offense. He finally gets his hands locked around Kharchla's leg but is too extended and can't finish. Kennedy's running out of time now - he gets back to his single leg but Kharchla defends again and time runs out to give Kharchla the 7-3 win.

Final: Carson Kharchla, Ohio State dec. Patrick Kennedy, Iowa - 7-3

184: #5 Gabe Arnold, Iowa vs #20 Ryder Rogotzke, Ohio State

1st period: A slow start to this one with neither wrestling taking any committed attacks. Now, about 90 seconds in Arnold gets to a clean single leg but Rogotzke scrambles through to avoid giving up the takedown. Arnold continues to attack and almost finishes for a takedown but Rogotzke shows off how tricky he can be and again narrowly avoids giving up a takedown. It's scoreless after the first period. 

2nd period: Arnold goes down in the third period and escapes in about 6 seconds. Arnold gets back to his offense but Rogotzke defends again to barely avoid giving up the takedown - it's 1-0 at the end of the second period.

3rd period: Rogotzke goes down in the third period and escapes in 3 seconds to tie the score at 1. Neither wrestler gets close to scoring in the final 90 seconds of the period and we're headed to overtime!

Overtime: Not much action in the first minute of overtime. Arnold hits a nice post and runs to a single leg. He tries to finish with a double but Rogotzke gets his hips back to defend the double. Rogotzke comes up with a front headlock and tries for an inside-trip but Arnold catches the attack with a body lock and finishes to earn the takedown and overtime victory! Huge win for the Hawkeyes and that will put them in a great position to win this dual.

Final: Gabe Arnold, Iowa dec. Ryder Rogotzke, Ohio State - 4-1, SV-1

197: #1 Stephen Buchanan, Iowa vs #18 Seth Shumate, Ohio State

1st period: Buchanan gets off to a quick start finishing a single leg and then transitions almost immediately to a cross-wrist tilt. He only gets two swipes but leads 5-0 early in this match. Buchanan rides for about 50 seconds and then lets Shumate up - the escape makes it 5-1. Buchanan earns another takedown off a single leg with just 3 seconds left in the first period to lead 8-1 going into the second.

2nd period: Buchanan goes down and earns a quick escape to extend his lead to 9-1. The pace slows but Buchanan gets back to his offense and finishes a clean single leg with about 20 seconds left in the second period to hold a 12-1 lead.

3rd period: Shumate goes neutral to start the final frame and Buchanan finishes a double just 20 seconds into the period to extend his lead to 15 -1. Buchanan transitions to a cross-wrist tilt and earns 3 nearfall points to close out the tech fall victory - 18-1.

Final: Stephen Buchanan, Iowa TF Seth Shumate, Ohio State - 18-1

285: #11 Ben Kueter, Iowa vs #5 Nick Feldman, Ohio State

1st period: Not a ton of action in the first period. Kueter takes a shot but can't get his hands locked around Feldman's legs. Aside for some fakes and hand fighting - that's about all the action from the opening frame.

2nd period: Kueter goes down in the second period and escapes in about 5 seconds to take the 1-0 lead. Now Feldman takes his first committed attack of the match with a nice low single. Kueter defends, scrambles through, and counters for a takedown and a 4-0 lead. Feldman quickly flips the script and gets a reversal to cut the lead in half. Kueter escapes with 30 seconds to go in the second period and now leads 5-2. 

3rd period: Feldman goes down in the third period and quickly escapes. Feldman is coming forward with urgency now but Kueter is doing a good job of handfighting and holding position. Kueter gets called for stalling with about 30 seconds to go in the match. Feldman continues to march forward but he can't get to Kueter's legs. Kueter defends to the end and secures the biggest win of his young college career. Huge ending for Iowa and the fans at Carver-Hawkeye Arena are fired up and on their feet for Kueter.

Final: Ben Kueter, Iowa dec. Nick Feldman, Ohio State - 5-3
