Cowboy Wrestling In Third Place at Big 12 Championships
COLUMBIA, Mo. – The No. 3-ranked Oklahoma State wrestling team enters tonight’s final round in third place with 56 team points. The Missouri Tiger lead the field with 61 points, while Oklahoma and Iowa State sit in second and fourth with 58.5 and 21 points, respectively.
For the third-straight year, the Cowboys put six wrestlers into the finals, including Jordan Oliver at 133 pounds, Josh Kindig at 141 pounds, Jamal Parks at 149 pounds, Chris Perry at 174 pounds, Cayle Byers at 197 pounds and Austin Marsden at heavyweight.
Missouri has eight finalists, Oklahoma has three and Iowa State has three.
Oliver, Kindig and Perry all had convincing bonus-point wins in the semifinals, as Oliver pinned Iowa State’s Shayden Terukina in 4:50, Kindig earned a major decision over Iowa State’s No. 17 Luke Goettl, 12-4, and Perry pinned Oklahoma’s Kyle Detmer in 6:14.
Parks’ win was an 8-3 decision over Joe Cozart of Iowa State, while Byers and Marsden’s victories came with more excitement.
Both Cowboy wrestlers earned late takedowns in the first sudden victory period to advance to the final. Byers brought down No. 11 Jerome Ward of Iowa State to win 5-3, while Marsden topped Missouri’s Devin Mellon, 3-1.
The Pokes went 2-2 in third-place matches with No. 14 Jon Morrison defeating Iowa State’s No. 19 Ryak Finch, 4-1, at 125 pounds; No. 20 Albert White earning a major decision over Iowa State’s Michael Moreno, 15-4, at 157 pounds; and Dallas Bailey and Chris McNeil dropping their bouts at 165 and 184 pounds, respectively.
The championship finals start at 6:30 p.m.
