125: Tyler Dorrell/Eddie Kilmara-OSU v. Kyle Garcia-OU
Very possible that John Smith has seen enough of Tyler Dorrell and may pull Eddie Kilmara’s redshirt. Dorrell has competed admirably, but a combination of the weight cut and a lack of natural ability is hindering Tyler’s ability to be effective. Eddie would give the Cowboys a nice upgrade at this weight. Garcia is quality in his own right, but not spectacular. I feel like this is a close match. I hate hedging and basically picking two different results(I.E. Dorrell to lose, Kilmara to win), so I won’t do it. Since I don’t know for sure who OSU is putting out there, I will give Garcia the nod and the win.
Kyle Garcia WBD Tyler Dorrell
3-0 Oklahoma
133: #8 Jon Morrison v. #13 Cody Brewer-OU
In my opinion these are two wrestlers who may be even in skill levels right now, but are going in opposite directions. At the very least I see Brewer progressing with each match. Not long ago I predicted a bright future for Jon Morrison. I was sold after his SV win over Zach Sanders in Minnesota. Seemingly through a combination of injuries or just lack of development, Morrison has not progressed since that win a few years ago. I thought that a new weight class would benefit Morrison and help him become more offensive. At this point it remains to be seen. This is not to suggest that Morrison is struggling mightily, or not contributing. Just the contrary, he sits at 6-2 with losses to tough wrestlers. My opinion is simply that he has the talent to beat the guys he’s losing to and simply has not.
Cody Brewer is a wrestler I’ve had my eye on for some time. He announced himself at Fila Juniors when he beat Logan Stieber in 2 straight periods. Cody has had a nice beginning to his season, winning 8 of his 10 matches by bonus points. Cody is a relentless wrestler in all positions. He has great power combined with his length and an excellent single leg. On top he rides with pressure and has a variety of turns like cradles and tilts. I still believe he enters this match as a slight underdog given Morrison’s experience and Brewers tendencies to be a bit over-zealous. I am of the opinion that if Brewer avoids the big mistake his pace will eventually wear on Morrison and he will wind up the winner.
So I’m calling the upset.
Cody Brewer WBD Jon Morrison
6-0 Oklahoma
141: Julian Feikert v. #1 Kendric Maple
Prediction? Pain. Maple should be all over Feikert in this one. He is a bad match up for nearly every wrestler in the country, and that’s no different against a guy like Feikert. Julian will be looking to show that his pin over Nick Dardanes was not a fluke and announce himself as a top 20 guy at 141. I just don’t see him being able to keep Maple at bay. I see Kendric coming out with urgency for bonus points, knowing that his team will desperately need them. I don’t see Feikert being able to keep him at bay.
Kendric Maple WTF Julian Feikert
11-0 Oklahoma
149: #1 Jordan Oliver-OSU v. #7 Nick Lester-OU
Two top ten guys here, but I don’t see any reason this match will ever be in doubt. Jordan’s abilities and strengths are well documented, so I won’t expound on them any more than necessary. Lester relies on top wrestling to win matches, and I don’t see JO having much trouble getting away. Oliver will have a huge advantage on his feet, and will possibly get a turn or two. I foresee Jordan further cementing in all our minds that he will be fine at 149. His body of work thus far proves that is true.
Jordan Oliver WMD Nick Lester
11-4-OU
157-#14 Alex Dieringer-OSU v. #16 Matt Lester
Two guys who have yet to be tested by elite wrestlers at this point. Dieringer is coming off a SV win over Zilverburg. In that match Zilverburg gave Dieringer real problems from top. Enter Matt Lester, a tough , savvy top wrestler. I have said I foresee a very good year from Dieringer this year and would be mildly surprised to see him not on the podium. I am interested to see how he responds from a close call one week ago. Alex will have the advantage on his feet, Matt’s advantage is on the mat(pun intended, you’re welcome). Oklahoma State as a team has had their struggles from bottom, so I may be going against conventional wisdom picking Dieringer, when many signs suggest this will be Lester’s match to lose. Oh well.
Alex Dieringer WBD Matt Lester
11-7-OU
165: #3 Tyler Caldwell v. #6 Bubby Graham
Really excited for this one. Caldwell faces his old team for the first time. Caldwell, has had a great start to his season so far. He has dominated each opponent he has faced and is inching closer and closer to the Dake/Taylor discussion that has dominated college wrestling discussion. I have been impressed with his attacks on his feet and his relentless approach. Bubby Graham, however, has had a really nice year for himself so far. He is also an aggressive wrestler, and while Dake handled him without much issue, he got in deep a few times on shots that would take down mortal men (I.E. not Kyle Dake). So I think this match is actually closer than people might think. In the end I think Caldwell physically is going to be much stronger, and will hold position well against Graham. I think Caldwell wins close and comfortably, a throwback match to the style we saw from him 2 years ago. Graham will also have to be mindful on bottom as Caldwell can be a pretty pesky rider, though he has not been able to turn elite guys as of yet.
Tyler Caldwell WBD Bubby Graham
11-10 OU
174: #1 Chris Perry-OSU v. Matt Reed-OU
Perry enters here as a massive favorite over Reed. There is not much to say. Perry should dominate all phases. Perry has struggled getting turns so far, so I’m not sure if he manages to get the fall or even a 5 point tech. I’m sensing a major or 4 point tech for Chris. Especially if he spends too much time working on top and doesn’t get the points. My point is, this should be lopsided.
Chris Perry WMD Matt Reed
13-11 OSU
184: #19 Chris Chionuma-OSU v. Greg Wilson-OU
Chionuma has flat out impressed me in the few matches I’ve seen of him this year. He was slick on his feet and powerful. He’s more than a strong double leg from what I can tell. He uses motion and fakes to work both sides of guys. Not many guys out there are taking down Kevin Steinhaus more than once a match. He also brings the ability to turn on top. Then there’s Greg Wilson. The Freshman is going to have his hands full against Chionuma, who I believe will only climb the rankings from this point on. The 3-6 Wilson will have an uphill battle to prevent bonus points. Wilson has been bonused by Jimmy Sheptock, Ben Bennett and Thomas Barreiro, so he’s been tested before against solid wrestlers. I think Wilson finds a way to keep this to a decision somehow.
Chris Chionuma WBD Greg Wilson
16-11 OSU
197: #10 Blake Rosholt-OSU v. Brad Johnson-OU
Rumors swirling that Rosholt is a bit banged up at this point, so I’m not sure who exactly we will see. It is possible that OSU pulls Freshman Austin Schafer’s redshirt to spell an injured Rosholt. This would make sense considering he will have to sit either this year or next year behind Blake. All that being said, I have no inside information at this point, merely speculation as to who the Cowboys will use. 5-3 Johnson will have his hands full with whoever OSU puts out there. The winner, from my perspective will be the Oklahoma State wrestler; I’m not ready to give bonus points for Schafer or Zach White though. Since I put Rosholt down though I’ll predict a bonus point victory. Johnson simply will be outmatched.
The upper weights are truly Oklahoma State’s wheelhouse, which is unfortunate for OU who is very young at these weights.
Blake Rosholt WBD Brad Johnson
19-11 OSU
285: #4 Alan Gelogaev-OSU v. Keldrick Hall
Not going to belabor the point. Gelogaev should smoke Hall. Z is coming off a loss, and I’m sure will be wrestling looking to get off the mat in a hurry. Hall has not done much better up at heavyweight this year. Z is a dynamic wrestler and I see him getting the toss and the fall. Even if he doesn’t get the fall, I don’t see this match ever being in doubt. Z puts the exclamation point on this Bedlam dual with a fall to end it.
Alan Gelogaev WBF Keldrick Hall
25-11 Oklahoma State
As I mentioned earlier, the Cowboys are loaded where the Sooners are young and weaker. Insert Howe, Rutt and Patterson this dual gets real interesting real fast. No such luck for this year, but this will still be a quality dual with a number of extremely skilled wrestlers.
