The Southern Scuffle has always been a great tournament. But this year’s storylines are almost too good to be true. From both the team race to the compelling individual match-ups, this year’s Scuffle will serve as an NCAA prequel.
- Dake-Taylor II
Alright, we got the “Match of the Century,” with all its pageantry and fanfare at the All Star Classic. But it was a tentative bout from both guys. With a potential match-up still looming at NCAA’s, will both guys open up? Can you imagine if they unleashed their offenses?
ANTIMATTER!
Will David Taylor get his revenge against the baddest dude in college wrestling, Kyle Dake?
- The “Other” Match-up of PSU-Cornell Returning Champs
Dake-Taylor gets all the headlines. But don’t forget, Ed Ruth and Steve Bosak are on deck. Ruth, as an undefeated returning NCAA Champ, might be the most dominant wrestler in the country. All Bosak did last year was win the deepest bracket at NCAA’s and beat the defending champ in the finals.
- Oliver’s Quest
Jordan Oliver, one of the slickest takedown artists in the game, has looked sharp in his rare two-weight-class jump from 133 to 149. He majored returning All American Nick Lester earlier this year. But that’s considered a minor test to what he will potentially face at the Scuffle.
Returning NCAA and Big Ten Runner-Up, Dylan Ness and the pinning machine that is 4th-ranked Andrew Alton will be in Oliver’s bracket. Along with Cole Von Ohlen and Nick Brascetta, 5 of the Top 7 ranked 149’s will be in Chattanooga.
- Beasts At the Top
With 10 returning All Americans back this season, the Heavyweight class in Division I is loaded with talent. The Scuffle will truly serve as a mini-NCAA tournament at this weight this year.
Three of the Top Four nationally ranked wrestlers are in the field including returning NCAA Champion Tony Nelson, #2-Dom Bradley, and #4-Alan Gelogaev, who has split matches with Nelson.
Additionally, young guns Jeremy Johnson and Mike McMullan, both AA’s last year, are also expected in the bracket.
- Three #1 vs #2’s
There are three brackets that, if the pundits are right, would result in NCAA finals.
Dake vs. Taylor, Ruth vs. Bosak, and Nelson vs. Bradley.
-Half of the Nation’s #1’s
Oliver, Dake, Perry, Ruth, and Nelson
-Six of our Ten Pound-For-Pound
#1-Kyle Dake
#2-Ed Ruth
#3-David Taylor
#7-Jordan Oliver
#8-Tony Nelson
#10-Chris Perry
