US Men's Freestyle did well on Saturday night at the Dave Schultz Memorial in Colorado Springs. With a finalist in each weight, American's won 4 of the 7 golds.
55kg: vs. Mamuro Handa (JPN) def. Mark McKnight (NLWC), 1-1, 2-0
Notes: Handa was 3rd at last year’s Shultz. Steve Mytych (LVAC) finished 4th.
60kg: Devin Carter (Hokie) def. Bajrang (IND), 1-1, 0-2, 3-0
Notes: Bajrang, who was 8th at last year’s Junior Worlds, beat Reece Humphrey in the semi’s. Humphrey’s finished 3rd.
66kg: Mogamed Kurbanaliev (RUS) def. Adam Hall (Titan), 2-0, 1-1
Notes: Kubranaliev was last year’s Junior World Champion and just took 5th at the Yarygin last week. Boris Novachkov (Cal Poly/Bulgaria) was 4th. He had a great tournament, especially considering he was at 145.5. He beat Kellen Russell and Kevin LaValley.
74kg: Aliamaz Sanakoev (RUS) def. Colt Sponseller (NYAC), 1-0, 3-1
Notes: Sanakoev was also a Junior World Champ last year.
84kg: Jon Reader (Sunkist) wbf. Austin Trotman (Titan), :27
Notes: Reader put an immediate halt on Trotman’s hot streak. Clayton Foster, who Reader beat in semi’s, was 4th.
96kg: Wynn Michalak (Titan) def. Deron Winn (Cyclone WC), 2-0, 4-0
Notes: Interesting bracket. Top seeded Les Sigman (NLWC), who was 3rd at the Olympic Team Trials, lost his first match and defaulted out. Missouri freshman, Willie Miklus, beat the man that beat Sigman before losing to Winn.
120kg: Zach Rey (LVAC) ff. Sunny Dhinsa (CAN)
Notes: Dhinsa, who was 5th at JR World’s last year, defaulted in the finals. Top seeded Tervel Dlagnev won his first bout then defaulted out. Rey posted an impressive 3-0, 3-0 win over Ryan Tomei in the semi’s.
