CP Handicaps Day I, What 2 Watch 4 Day II

125-Seeds essentially went chalk except for Dom Parisi blowing through two seeded wrestlers: Jarrod Garnett(5) and Tyler Cox(12). Dom has a tough match up with Megaludis next who has looked sharp. Briefly looking over the other quarters, Waters/Snyder will be interesting since both thrive on the mat. I think that favors Waters, so I’d be surprised to see him lose. Snyder is dangerous though. McDonough takes on Garrett who needed a late turn to beat unseeded Evan Silver. Either way, Garrett is going to be a tough match up for McD who is just not himself. Kraisser v. Delgado will have two great scramblers, but Jesse is the man in my mind. Two different levels here.
Consi Interest: Wrestle back wise not too much going on early. Garnett, Sprenkle among the big names occupying the wrestle backs. Triggas v. Cox is a pretty good match for this early in consolations. So tune into that one if you have the chance.
133 - Quarters literally identically to how I thought they’d go. Which was basically close to chalk. Brewer beating Wolfensperger was no surprise as he had done it handily before. Now he gets Stieber which is mildly interesting considering the Freestyle beating Cody put on Logan. That being said this isn’t going to go that way. Dardanes takes on Schopp as an all star rematch. I like Dardanes here(though Minnesota isn’t exactly en fuego right now). Graff takes on McCormick. Graff got by a pesky Randy Cruz. I like Graff here with the caveat that it’s a morning match close to weigh ins, and he had been at 141 earlier, so watch Graffs tank late. I still like him to win. Morrison v. Ramos rematch, two Illinois guys and this was a tight one earlier this year. I like Ramos by 3-4 this time around.
Consi Interest: Mack v. Wilcox is a pretty interesting consolation match. Not much else going on. As I said in the preview the guys who are good at 133 are good. The guys that aren’t, you can tell. Very clear separation, which explains why they went completely chalk.
141 - Pretty much as expected save Durso over Dardanes(mild upset, nothing Earth-shattering). Stieber gets the scrambly Durso. I like Stieber in a 3 point match or so. Not going to blow him out, Durso is tough to score on. Port v. Henderson should be Port as he’s handled him historically. Ugi takes on Mangrum who has looked very very vulnerable so far. Don’t be surprised if Ugi beats Mangrum(again). Maple takes on Ballweg. Not going to be competitive there. All Maple.
Consi Interest: Much like 133 basically chalk in the consolations. Keith v. Pearsall is interesting from a team race perspective. Nevinger-Mecate will be a good one as well.
149 - Ok, now things get a little more nuts. Drake Houdashelt is on a rampage so far. He’s always been a tough guy and beating Alton and Ness are far from his first good wins, but stringing them together is quite impressive. He will take on Kevin Tao in the quarters, which is equally improbable (in my mind) as he beat Vinson, who was pretty tough all year. I like Houdashelt to win again and make the semis. Good for him. JO takes on Sueflohn who had a nice win over Brascetta. Two different leagues here, JO cruises. Santos needed a suckback (that’s what we call it in VA) late in the match to beat his first round opponent. Looked better in round two and will take on Cole Von Ohlen who has been fine, but as I said before, I believe is vulnerable. Won’t be shocked if Santos pulls the(ever so slight) upset. On the bottom Chamberlain will take on Sakaguchi for about the hundredth time (Actually 8th.) Sakaguchi is 1-7 against Chamberlain so he’ll have to channel his inner Mark Perry to pull this one off. It will be close though.
Consi Interest: Between Grajales, Vinson and Alton, only 1 can All American at this point. So that’s pretty nuts. Grajales and Alton square off in the next consolation round. I like Alton to win that one. I think Vinson might ride him into oblivion though the next round.
157 - Ok, so this one is pretty nuts too. Napoli and Green go down in round 1, Fleming in round 2. So our quarters look pretty interesting right now. Alton and Welch will meet as predicted and the winner has a nice path to the finals it would seem. They will take on the winner of the Jedd Moore (Snapped the Snapper) v. David Bonin who beat Kyle Bradley who beat James Green. Ivanov will take on Dieringer in the other quarter. I like Dieringer to make the semis in lieu of Joey Napolis quick departure. DSJ takes on Demas in a scary, scary quarter. Demas (as predicted here) has looked great so far beating two seeded guys (Pena, Dong). Josh has pushed DSJ before. Potential upset looms here.
Consi Interest: Dong v. Hickman and Peppelman v. Fleming are two exciting consolation matches. I like Fleming and Dong to win.
165 - A few little upsets here. Graham loses to Yohn and Massa beats Monk. All 4 guys were seeded, so nothing groundbreaking. Dake takes on Sulzer who he previously pinned. Dake wins here. Massa may pose an interesting match up for Caldwell. Massa’s extremely strong and holds position well. I’d expect it to be close. Potential upset there. Yates takes on Yohn who I think he should handle. Yates has been looking very tough. David Taylor v. Polz again. More of the same there. DT by lots and lots.
Consi Interest: Moore v. Veltre looks to be the cream of the consolation crop for that round.
174 - Pretty much as expected save Trent Weatherman's rampage through Yates and Blanton. Very exciting quarters here for the most part. Perry takes on Heflin. Perry looked quite vulnerable early, so it’ll be interesting to see how he does tomorrow morning. Asper v. Kokesh, and I like Kokesh. Storley v. Evans and I have not a clue what to think, I’m sticking with Storley though. Brown cruises by Weatherman with little issue.
Consi Interest: Blanton v. Brown and Porter v. Fausey will both be exciting matches. Blanton has dropped matches early in tournaments before and has went on absolute tears. Don’t be surprised if he does that to a certain extent here.
184 - A few interesting results for sure. Max Thomusseit blows through two seeded guys Chionuma and Ihnen. Ed Ruth awaits you, Godspeed Max. Still a very impressive run. Ethen beating Steinhaus was another upset as well. Ethen looked great at Big 10’s and is once again impressive. He gets Bosak, who got by a pesky Mason Bailey last round. Ethen v. Bosak will be a tight one. I think Ethen matches up better with Bosak than Steinhaus in a vacuum, but I’d still be surprised to see Ethen win here. Hamlins grinded through and will take on Loder. I like Hamlin a lot but haven’t got to watch his matches. I’ve only seen his scores, so I can’t really assess his health. I like Hamlin. Bennett got by a pesky Dallago and he’ll take on Sheptock. I like Bennett.
Consi Interest: Not much going on consolation wise. The studs are more or less separated.
197 - No major upsets here. Gadson falling to Rosholt was a slight one, though their Big 12 final was close. Kilgore apparently is going to rip through as much of the Burak family as he possibly can this tournament (Gabe didn’t enter, did he?) as he takes on Micah in the quarters. Micah beat him in the Scuffle two years ago. Dustin went on to win NCAA’s that year. I don’t smell an upset here though. All Killer. Hernandez takes on Meeks as expected. Give me Hernandez. Rosholt will face Wilps who looked really good against Perry (who has given him VERY tough matches historically). So I like Wilps. Quentin takes on Schiller who pulled I guess what could be considered an upset over Schiedel (though I don’t view it that way ). Q has been very content to win close. I wouldn’t employ that strategy against Schiller. Definitely not against Wilps should he make the semis. I’ll cautiously choose Quentin to beat Schiller.
Consi Interest: Gadson v. Haynes looks like a good one, as is Nathan Burak v. Brandon Palik (who many don’t know but he’s really a solid guy).
285 - Quarters as I thought they’d be save the Bobby Telford void in the 3rd quarter final. Hurt his knee and hurt it bad in round one and defaulted to Felix who gets Z. Z is not messing around so far, so I don’t expect much different tomorrow morning. Z gets the stick. Dom takes on Thomusseit who I think he should beat. Thomusseit does present some speed and athleticism that could present problems. McMullan will take on Hanke, and as I said, I like McMullan here. Both have looked solid. On the bottom Trice takes on Nelson. I like Nelson, but knowing what I know about those two wrestlers, it will be boring.
Consi Interest: Medberry v. Cooper the only one that caught my eye. Cooper is huge and has a moustache. So there’s also that.
