It was a fantastic day of wrestling inside the Stile Fieldhouse at the University of Akron.

Everywhere you looked there were compelling match-ups with some of the country's top wrestlers going at it.

On the line is a chance to represent the U.S. at the Cadet Worlds or University Games.

The Cadets have wrestled down to the round robin, and in some cases, the finals. At the University level, quarters will start tomorrow.

Below are Day I Notes and tomorrow's matchu-ups. The action resumes 9PM ET Sunday morning.

Mike Labry (NYAC) vs. Brandon Wright (Viking WC)
Jamel Hudson (Blue and Gold) vs. Ethan Owens (Hawkeye WC)

Nebraska’s James Green has been on fire, posting four tech and a cumulative differential of 42-2.
Do yourself a favor and look for the Josh Dziewa-Mike Moreno bout on FLO when it gets posted. WILD.

79KG
Day I Notes:

Two controversial calls in this bracket on Day I. First Logan Storely was awarded a takedown at the buzzer with Matt Brown in a tripod. Moments later, Brian Brill appeared to have a late takedown in a see-saw battle with Mark Martin that wasn’t called.
Oh, and Andrew Howe looks incredible.

Jesse Shanaman (FLWC) vs. Tanner Weatherman (Cyclone WC)
Andrew Howe (NYAC) vs. Mark Martin (Ohio RTC)
Logan Storley (MN Storm) vs. Duke Pickett (FLWC)
Cody Caldwell (Panther WC) vs. John Staudenmayer (Cardinal WC)

84KG
Day I Notes:

Ed Ruth is pretty good. Courts pinned Gabe Dean to get to him in quarters.
It appears the weight cut to 185 hasn’t had any ill effects on Cam Simaz. He hasn’t given up a point in his three techs.

Quarterfinals
Ed Ruth (Nittany Lion WC) vs. Kenny Courts (Ohio RTC)
Jack Dechow (Virginia Beach RTC) vs. Max Thomousseit (Pitt WC)
Kyle Crutchmer (OK State) vs. Alex Meyer (Hawkeye WC)

Travis Rutt (Oklahoma) vs. Nathan Burak (Hawkeye WC)
Micah Burak (Hawkeye WC) vs. Tim McCall (Badger WC)
Matt Wilps (Pitt WC) vs. Cayle Byers (Titan Mercury)

120KG
Day I Notes:

After just missing AA honors this year, Bucknell’s Joe Stolfi continues to impress. Minnesota RS Freshman, Mike Kroells had a big win over JT Felix.

Quarterfinals
Tyrell Fortune (Grand Canyon) vs. Matt Tourdot (Virginia Beach RTC)
Mike Kroells (MN Storm) vs. Nick Gwiazdowski (Wolfpack WC)
Austin Marsden (Cowboy WC) vs. Cole Tobin (Badger WC)
Joe Stolfi (Bison Legend) vs. Tony Nelson (MN Storm)

Cadets

42KG
Day I Notes:

The big story was Cade Olivas going down twice, to Kaden Gfeller and to Austin Gomez. Gomez beat Gfeller in a great bout.

Finals: Austin Gomez (IL) vs. Brent Jones (MN)

46KG
Day I Notes:

Devin Brown teched Fargo AA Matt Schmitt. As long as he doesn’t get teched in his final Round Robin match, he’s in the finals.

Finals: Devin Brown (PA) or Ben Freeman (MI) vs. Ian Parker (MI)

50KG
Day I Notes:

Spencer Lee has been obliterating his pool. He’s the only undefeated in the top half.
In Pool B both Daton Fix and Andrew Merholz are undefeated, setting up what is essentially a semifinal.

Pool A RR: Spencer Lee (PA) vs. Noah Baughman (OH)

Pool B RR: Daton Fix (OK) vs. Andrew Merholz (IL)

54KG
Day I Notes:

Kaid Brock was my pick to win it and he’s on track to reach the finals. He’s the only undefeated up top. Both him and Stevan Micic have looked incredible. Micic is down below where both he and Austin Assad are undefeated.

Pool A: Kaid Brock (OK) vs. Kyle Norstrem

Pool B: Austin Assad (OH) vs. Stevan Micic (IN)

58KG
Day I Notes:

Pool A was chaos. 8th Grader Nick Lee and Lincoln Olson are the undefeateds up top. Zahid Valencia was beaten by Olsen and Mark Voss.

Pool A: Nick Lee (IN) vs. Lincoln Olson (MI)

Pool B: Sean Fausz (KY) vs. Will Crisco (CT)

63KG
Day I Notes:

Nothing but 4’s on the board for both Pico and Massa and they’ll wrestle for the right to get to the finals in the morning.
Crazy situation in Pool B. There’s three guys left (Tyler Berger, Jo Jo Smith, and Larry Early) and all of them have a chance to get to the finals.
Jo Jo beat Berger, Early beat Jo Jo. Early and Berger wrestle in the morning. If Early wins, he’s in the finals. If Berger gets a tech, he’s in. If Berger wins by decision and Early scores a point, Early is in. If Berger wins by a shut-out decision, Jo Jo is in.

Pool A RR: Aaron Pico (CA) vs. Logan Massa (MI)

Pool B RR: Tyler Berger (OR) vs. Larry Early (IL)

69KG
Day I Notes:

Last summer, Tyler Mann became the first Fargo All American from Arkansas. Now he’s a Fila AA too. He’s guaranteed 3rd in the pool.

Finals: Taylor Lujan (GA) or Jon Jay Chavez (ID) vs. Nick Reenan (TX)

76KG
Day I Notes:

Mark Hall has been wrestling unlike I’ve ever seen him before. He’s quicker and more aggressive than ever. He teched Chandler Rogers. as long as he scores one point against Chris Weiler in the RR tomorrow morning (and that’s pretty much assured) he’s in the finals.
Bo Nickal won the top half with a fall over Myles Martin.

Finals: Bo Nickal (TX) vs. Mark Hall (MN)

85KG
Day I Notes:

Two guys have really stood out: Angus Arthur, who’s looking for double Fila titles after winning GR on Friday, and Robert Steveson. Both posted impressive wins over quality opponents. Steveson is in, Arthur needs one more win.

Finals: Angus Arthur (MI) or Andrew Fenton (OH) vs. Robert Steveson (MN)

100KG
Day I Notes:

Benick and Nash have destroyed everyone. Nash needs another win to get in. He’ll have Christian Jenco, who wrestled Nash to three periods last year in Fargo, in the morning.
On Friday, Nash beat Benick despite losing on the scoreboard 14-9. Benick was cautioned out.

Finals: Lance Benick (MN) vs. Christian Jenco (NJ) or Roy Nash (UT)

125KG
Day I Notes:

Everyone in the top pool has a loss. But Adam Lemke-Bell is in the driver’s seat with a fall.
The winner of the Nader-Toppel round robin guarantees finals.

Pool A RR: Adam Lemke-Bell (IL) vs. Cordell Soileau (VA)

Pool B RR: Nick Nader (OH) vs. Hunter Toppel (WI)
