Wednesday will be Day III at the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, where the final weight of 74Kg will be contested with the opening of the Women's tournament. Jordan Burroughs will look to continue his dominant streak and give the U.S. it's first Gold of 2013. The two lightest of the women, Victoria Anthony (48KG) and Alyssa Lampe (51KG) will look to get the girls off on the right track.
Below are the trio's first bouts and a brief sketch of their opponents.
74KG - #1-Jordan Burroughs (NJ, Sunkist Kids) vs. Gamid Dzhalilov (TJK)
Burroughs hasn't been beaten in international competition in over two years. He's won this weight class at the London Olympics and at the World Championships in Istanbul in 2011.
First Round Draw: Burroughs should have little problem with Dzhalilov, who's never placed in the Top 10 in an international event. However, Burroughs will face a major hurdle earlier as his second round opponent will likely be Kakhaber Khubezhty, who won the spot on the World Team by beating Denis Tsargush, a former World Champion that was ranked 3rd in July.
48KG - #1-Alyssa Lampe (WI, Sunkist Kids) vs. Nirmali Devi (IND)
Lampe won Bronze at last year's Worlds and is currently ranked #1.
First Round Draw: Lampe is a heavy favorite in her first match withg Devi, who finished 9th in the Asian Games this year and is unranked.
51KG - #6-Victoria Anthony (CA, Sunkist Kids) vs. Valya Trandeva (BUL)
Anthony won the Austrian Open this year as well as finishing runner-up to Lampe at both the U.S. Open and U.S. World Team Trials. She's currently ranked 6th in the World at 48KGs.
First Round Draw: Anthony is a young up-and-comer with two Junior World titles. She'll be favored, but against a game oppoonent. Trandeva has placed 5th at University Worlds and 7th at Euro's.
