It has been confirmed that Central Michigan has hired three-time Division I All-American Ryan Cunningham as his alma mater's Head Assistant Wrestling Coach.
Cunningham fills the vacancy left by Jason Mester, who was tabbed as Head Coach at Bloomsburg University earlier this summer. Cunningham, a 2000 graduate, became CMU's first three-time All-American while placing 4th at 158 in 1998, 7th at 174 in '99, and 3rd at 174 in 2000.
Ryan is the younger brother of current Penn State assistant Casey Cunningham, CMU's first Division I national champion. Ryan was inducted into the CMU Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010 and served in the United States Marine Corps from 2002-2007. Cunningham hails from Midleton, MI and attended Fulton High School. He will be an immediate asset, on and off the mat, to famed Head Coach Tom Borrelli.
Cunningham is not the only coaching move at CMU this season. Over the summer, Ben Bennett was hired as an assistant coach after becoming the school's first four-time All-American in March. Bennett replaces Steve Dwyer, who accepted a job in the private sector after serving as an assistant for the last three seasons.
