Movers and Shakers
• The 70th Geary Annual Invitational, the nation’s oldest high school wrestling tournament, took place on Friday and Saturday in Oklahoma. #13 Broken Arrow (149.5 points; ten placers) edged Class 6A foe #12 Edmond North (147.5 points; 8 placers) to win the team title. Edmond North was missing two starters including Cy Trindle, who took third in the state last year, and had five champions: Paxton Rosen (106), Joel Dixon (182), Derek White (195; Tournament Outstanding Wrestler), Lance Dixon (220), and Andrew Dixon (285). Broken Arrow had two champions: Markus Simmons (120) and Davion Jeffries (126). Top-ranked Class 4A Tuttle finished in third (111.5 points; 9 placers) and Dakota Head won at 152. The two best teams in Class 5A Collinsville and Lawton MacArthur rounded out the top five.

• #4 Oak Park River Forest went 4-0 Saturday rolling through some of the nations elite teams at the Detroit Catholic Central Super Duals in Novi, Michigan. The Huskies topped in-state rival #19 Montini Catholic 36-18, #18 Detroit Catholic Central 42-13 winning ten bouts, St. Johns 42-13, and Davison 40-15 to cap off an impressive day for coach Mike Powell’s squad. Detroit Catholic Central was back to full-strength for the first time this year and showed their preseason hype by defeating #23 Brecksville 40-34 in a dual by winning eight bouts. The host team won nine bouts in their 44-25 victory over Montini Catholic.

• The two best prep teams nationally squared-off in the final of the NHSCA Final Four Wrestling Festival in York, Pennsylvania on Saturday with shorthanded #1 Blair Academy squeaking by #7 Wyoming Seminary, 27-24. Dylan Milonas (160) and Jordan Kutler (132) are out indefinitely with injuries for the Buccaneers. Give credit to Wyoming Seminary for winning seven bouts with key victories from Will Verallis at 132 over Alex Rinaldi and senior Tyler Ponte upending National Prep finalist Walker Dempsey at 145. Blair Academy sophomore Requeer van der Merwe (113) is in the groove over the last week in decisioning state champion Trent Olson only a week after upsetting Graham’s Eli Stickley.

• #14 Bethlehem Catholic had a statement win in their home gymnasium beating #20 Nazareth 40-17 in a Lehigh Valley Conference dual meet on Wednesday night. The clear favorite to four-peat as state champions in Class 2A, the Golden Hawks are finding momentum at the right time and are the cream of the crop in District 11 yet again this season.

• #25 Don Bosco Prep returns to the Top 25 after winning the National division of the Virginia Duals. They beat McDonogh School in the semifinal by a score of 47-18 and handed Nazareth their second loss of the week in the championship meet, 32-20. Nazareth was without the services of 145 pounder Sage Karam for undisclosed reasons, but Don Bosco Prep had a lift with Kyle Bierdumpfel, a state runner-up at 106 last year, back in the lineup as he wrestled at 126 and 132 throughout the weekend.

• #22 Bettendorf continues to climb the national rankings after beating in-state powerhouse Southeast Polk on Sunday in Ames. The final score was 37-27 with Bettendorf winning nine bouts including five bonus point victories.
