Movers and Shakers
• #3 Clovis traveled from the beautiful weather in California to the backwoods of Ohio and won the Top Gun at Alliance H.S. with twelve placers and 302 points over #7 Massillon Perry, which had nine placers and 287 points in a highly contested tournament that was decided by the consolations. Clovis was lead by champions Justin Mejia and Nick Nevills at 106 and 285, respectively. Finishing second for the Cougars were 126 - Khristian Olivas and 132 - Isaiah Hokit. Massillon Perry had four champions: 126 - David Bavery, 152 - Casey Sparkman, 160 - Tony Dailey, and 170 - Isaac Bast. Jose Rodriguez returned for the first time since injury defaulting in the first round at Ironman and was upended 3-0 by Marrysville senior Hayden Lee in the final at 113. Massillon Perry’s David Bavery defeated Clovis’ Olivas 8-3 in the only head-to-head finals matchup of the two top-ten teams.
• #1 Blair Academy won Escape The Rock at Council Rock H.S. in Holland, PA with thirteen placers and 277.5 points. The nation’s best team had four champions: 120 - Chaz Tucker, 138 - Joey McKenna, 152 - Mason Manville, and 170 - Brandon Dallavia. #13 Bethlehem Catholic continues to climb the rankings after placing nine wrestlers, which included four champions: 106 - Jake Riegel, 113 - Luke Karam, 126 - Zeke Moisey, and 220 - Andrew Dunn. Moisey defeated Blair’s Matthew Kolodzik in the final 6-4, which was a rematch from the Beast of the East final where Moisey won 7-4. Moisey scored two takedowns in the first period, but was close to giving up near fall twice on tilt’s from Kolodzik that were never awarded.
• In a Friday dual at University of Pennsylvania, #6 Wyoming Seminary blasted #9 Bergen Catholic 39-19. The Crusaders were without 182 Johnny Sebastian, who has been battling a shoulder injury. Seminary coach Scott Green had this to say about his teams red-hot performance over the last month, “We are peaking and have our eye on a prep national title. It has been a tough adjustment for some guys, but they are starting to believe in the way we do things. Our schedule broke some guys early. We have really benefitted from the one-two sophomore punch of Weiler and Reenan in the middle; those guys feed off of each other. We have proven to be as good as anyone in a dual. Guys like Tyler Ponte, Greg Kleinsmith, Will Verallis, Ryan McMullan and Danny Boychuck have all made major contributions in the big duals with Blair Academy, Bergen Catholic, and Franklin Regional. It has been a true team effort and we like the direction we are headed in.”
• #11 Broken Arrow was led by thirteen place winners to hold off #12 Stillwater at the 51st Bobby Lyons Invitational at Charles Page High in Sand Springs, Oklahoma. Broken Arrown scored 234 points to Stillwater’s 233.5. Stillwater had ten placers including five champions and #15 Edmond North finished third with 207.5 points and four champions. Broken Arrow head coach Shawn Jones reflected on their impressive two-week run that included a team title at the Geary Annual Invitational, “This time of season we know it's important to focus on improving every match. When we’re in this part of the season it's about discipline and character. Everybody is grinding, lots of competition, and few practices. (By) the end of February, we want to be fresh and rested entering the state tournament.”
• In the Garden State of New Jersey, the top teams continue to beat on one another. Saturday, #23 Bound Brook, now with their full lineup for the first time this season, won ten matches in their 36-19 victory over #25 Don Bosco Prep in a dual that had six bouts decided by two points or less. On Monday afternoon, Don Bosco Prep won a tight dual with previously ranked St. Peter’s Prep 30-27 where both teams won seven bouts and four of the matches were also decided by two points or less, with both teams winning two of those. Yes, St. Peter’s Prep defeated Bound Brook 35-28 at The Clash earlier this month, though Bound Brook was without two impact performers: Michael Johnson (285), ’13 state fifth, and rookie Stephan Glasgow at 120.
