NCAA Division I Wrestling 165-Pound Redshirt Report
The 165 pound weight class will be rife with young talent when the next NCAA Wrestling season rolls around. Few classes of redshirts will compare with the talent that 157 had. However, this is an extremely solid group of athletes, some had fine redshirt seasons, others show tremendous upside.
Daniel Lewis-Missouri-The word goin’ round is that Daniel Lewis will be a pretty tough customer for the Tigers next year. He took some losses to lesser guys, but he had some nice wins as well including one over UNI’s hammer Cooper Moore. Lewis is also pretty nasty on top with cradles! He lost to teammate Tyler Prazma early in the year but later on won 7-3. Indicating improvement. Also of note, he took former Boston hammer Nestor Taffor to sudden victory before falling 11-9! Would have loved to have seen that one! Lewis will slot in nicely with Mike England graduating. Here’s Lewis dominating his way to a KC Stampede title!
Corey Rasheed-Penn State-Not Sure what to make of Rasheed either. Like Dylan Milonas, I liked him coming out of high school, and he had limited action in his Freshman season. He only wrestled in one tournament, the Franklin & Marshall Open. Presumably, he was banged up during the season and unable to compete as much as the other PSU Redshirts (Bo Nickal, Jason Nolf, Nick Nevills). I remember Rasheed for some fantastic motion on his feet, excellent natural ability and tremendous top work with cradle’s. He wrestled the F & M Open at 174, but with Bo Nickal likely the man for the job there, I expect Rasheed to wrestled down at 165 next year, a weight PSU failed to qualify for NCAA’s. Look for production from Rasheed next year, but it may take a bit for him to get acclimated to the weight and used to the rigor of d1 competition. By the time the 2nd semester rolls around, i think he’ll be ready.
Austin Reese-Ohio-I’ll be 100% honest. I didn’t know a thing about Austin Reese coming into this season. Turning in a 27-2 record as a redshirt was an excellent start for the Bobcat. He did fall to EMU’s Dakota Juarez and Austin Trott were the lone blemishes. He didn’t notch any major wins but did upend Roger Wildmo and Jordan Wohlfert. That level of consistency is telling and could be indicative of a real nice season to come for Reese.
Dylan Milonas-Lehigh-Not a ton to say about Dylan, but I loved him as a prospect coming out of high school. He looked very solid in extremely limited action for the Mountain Hawks. He only wrestled 3 matches before getting injured. He wrestled at 157 where he beat Cody Law, Ronnie Garbinsky and Jahlani Callender. Not a ton can be derived from those results, however. He’ll be coming up to 165 or even 174 depending on who gets the starting nod between he and Ryan Preisch. Here's his win over the aforementioned Austin Reese in the Ironman Semi's:
Garrett Peppelman-UVA-Frankly, I was pretty surprised by Peppelman’s relative struggles this year at 165. He didn’t notch a win of note and many of his losses he was blown out: 16-2 loss to Trott, 8-2 loss to Rohskopf, and a 12-1 loss to Aaron McKinney. I like Peppelman coming out of high school, and that’s a big reason for his inclusion. I’m not trying to paint Garrett’s redshirt season as a failure, it simply didn’t reach the expectations I had for the PA State Champ. Peppelman wrestled 23 matches and absolutely won the majority of them. I’ve seen worse redshirt years get turned around and when you consider UVA has both Jordan Leen and Keith Gavin there to roll with Garrett, you can’t help but be encouraged.
Chandler Rogers-Oklahoma State- It was an excellent Redshirt campaign for the Cowboy. The whole country was hoping for the Rogers/Marsteller match at the NCO, but weather screwed it all up and we were denied that opportunity! Rogers did well and mostly only lost to tough this year, his losses were to Alex Dieringer, Seth Thomas, Dakota Friesth, Peyton Walsh and Coleman Gracey. He pinned Daniel Lewis, as well as Ryan Blees. Rogers very dangerous from neutral and has a great blend of upper body attacks as well as conventional leg atacks. Rogers main problem is going to be finding a spot in the lineup. It’s always possible Dieringer moves up, but that’s probably the only path to a starting spot for Rogers as Crutchmer currently occupies 174. He still bears mentioning whether he’s in the lineup or not.
Ryan Preisch-Lehigh-Super excited to watch Preisch next year. He’s the front runner for the 165 pound spot for Lehigh. Last year Preisch knocked off Jon Jay Chavez, Peyton Walsh and Coleman Gracey (twice). He took some losses along the way to Garrett Hammond, Matt Donahoe, Tristan Warner, Garrett Hammond, Casey Fuller and Tyler Prazma. So it wasn’t a total slam-dunk of a campaign. To be fair, those were mostly quality guys he knocked off. Preisch hit 5 tournaments this season. I think he’ll be a quality starter with an outside shot at an All-American finish.
