NCAA Division I Wrestling 184 - Pound Redshirt Report
The 2015 redshirt report at 184lbs
You can clearly tell I had difficulty finding a long list of guys coming off of redshirt. I scoured as I had for each weight, but couldn't come up with any guys coming back into the lineup. If I missed anyone, feel free to let me know!
Alex Utley-UNC-Coming off of an undefeated redshirt season, Utley, like teammate Evan Henderson will be a welcomed addition to the Tar Heel lineup this year. Utley won the Hokie Open this year but didn’t really notch a win of note in the process. Utley 2 years ago knocked off Jack Dechow but he wasn’t able to follow it up and failed to qualify for NCAA’s. UNC is trending the right way potentially, so I’m excited for his progress but am unsure how far he can go. I like that he can attack both sides fairly well, but he’ll need to give himself more opportunities and clean up some of his finishes as well. Here's his win over Jordan Rogers at the Reno TOC in 2013.
Zack Zavatsky-Virginia Tech-Just one loss on the year for the PA product in his redshirt season. He will have to contend with the very solid Austin Gabel next year to break into the lineup. As a reference point, Zavatsky’s only loss on the year was an 8-0 loss to Matt McCutcheon. Conversely, Gabel knocked off McCutcheon 5-3 and also beat Domenic Abounader before being sidelined for the year with an injury. We’ll see how he recovers and how healthy he is. Zavatsky will need to continue to progress to start, but if he breaks through, I expect production and a potential run at a conference title (alongside Utley) after Thomusseit’s graduation. Zavatsky has all the goods. He moves very well for an 84 pounder, his single leg is solid and he’s great from a front headlock as well. He was a tilt guy in high school. Some guys are able to adjust and keep turning guys with tilts at the next level and some don’t evolve. Zavatsky can ride to turn as well as just grind on a guy and ride tough. He likes to scoop his opponents right ankle or figure 4 that leg. Look for him to earn quite a few riding time points. Probably the most upside in this very small group of guys.
Corey Griego-Oregon State-The Beavers will have a solid replacement after losing All American Taylor Meeks to graduation. Corey Griego was 15-4 as a redshirt losing only to Taylor Meeks, Nikko Reyes, Ben Stroh and Austin Gaun. The first 3 are all plenty solid and the Gaun loss was a 7-6 match. I feel pretty good about Griego and feel certain the Oregon State staff are excited about him as well. Interestingly, Griego beat Nick Fiegner 6-0 this year. Fiegner had beaten him last year in high school in a very close match. This to me indicates Griego is coming along.
