NCAA Division I Wrestling 197 Pound Redshirt Report
We're coming down the homestretch for the NCAA Redshirt Reports. These have been a blast to do and will hopefully help you coming into next year as much as they'll help me.
197 Pounds was a far deeper crop than 184. I think there's a number of future All American's in this bunch personally.
Derek White-Nebraska-My mainest man Willie Saylor says Derek White is the real deal. Sometimes that’s good enough for me. White was the definition of quality last year while redshirting. He wrestled in 5 tournaments and lost to only J’den Cox, Pat Downey, Jace Bennett and Morgan McIntosh. He knocked off Scottie Boykin, Bryce Barnes and Marcus Harrington. The former Ironman champ will be in a battle with Aaron Studebaker for the starting job. I anticipate him breaking through and ultimately getting the nod at Nebraska.
Marcus Harrington-Iowa State-Marcus will have some big shoes to fill following up NCAA Champ Kyven Gadson. He had a very solid year himself knocking off Kris Klapprodt and Lucas Sheridan. His losses weren’t horrible falling to Kyven Gadson, Owen Scott and Max Huntley. I was super impressed with this guy at Fargo last year. Check out his finals win over Andrew Dixon here (mind blowing single leg finish in this one)! He moves incredibly well for an upperweight and has tremendous stength. I expect a big year from Harrington.
Owen Scott-Cornell- With Jace Bennett’s graduation the likely man for the job will be Owen Scott. Scott actually knocked off Jace last year early on. He fell to James Fox, Joe Ariola, Zach Nye and Morgan McIntosh. He knocked off Bennett, Jackson Lewis, Caleb Wallace and the aforementioned Marcus Harrington. I'm not sure if his upside is on par with Harrington's but you can expect production and likely NCAA qualification at a minimum if he's the guy for the Big Red.
Ruben Franklin-CSU Bakersfield-CSUB will get a definite boost in their upper weights when Ruben Franklin re-enters the fold. Franklin has some great wins in his career: Blake Rosholt, Phil Wellington, Anthony Abro, Alex Polizzi and Shawn Scott. He fell last year to Luke Bean and teammate Matt Williams. Check out Ruben’s dominant win over Phil Wellington last year at the Reno TOC!
Frank Mattiace-Penn-Mattiace took the year off to do the Ivy Shirt thing. He started out red hot 2 years ago knocking off Christian Boley, Nick Bonaccorsi, and Donald McNeil but cooled down a ton later in the season where he fell to Jackson Lewis, Jace Bennett, Daniel Mitchell and Brandon Palik. I'm anticipating more consistency and production this year as Mattiace will have more experience on the college scene.
