Wow! We thought that day 1 of Cadet Freestyle was incredible and we were wrong.

 

It got even better on the second day when the Juniors joined the party. The number of reasons why Fargo is the toughest tournament around became more evident as some of the best in the country were tested and others tasted defeat.

Triple Crown Hopes Dashed

 

Travis Whittlake won a USA Folkstyle title, a Greco title just a few days ago and was eyeing the Freestyle title. But Ohio’s Victor Marcelli had other plans. After a few lead changes Marcelli was out front 6-5 with short time left and Whittlake charging forward when Marcelli rolled him through for four and gave up two points in the process. A challenge would confirm the outcome and Marcelli would move on with a 10-7 victory.

Sasso has put on some weight since his runner-up finish at PA states, but it hasn’t seemed to phase his much. Now up at 132, the kid looks to be a stellar form. In the semis he was in a tight match with Greco champ Alex Lloyd when he locked up a tight cradle in the second period and finished the match with a fall. As he walked to the head table after the bout he gave Utah’s Brock Hardy (who was up next) a pretty tough stare before leaving the stage. Hardy and Sasso will meet in the 132-pound Cadet Freestyle finals.

We have seen wrestlers from the same state face off plenty all weekend and for Illinois, which has over 100 wrestlers in this tournament it’s not that surprising. However, Jason Renteria and Anthony Madrigal, who both wrestle for top-ranked Oak Park & River Forest High School in Illinois, met in the semifinals at 126. And it was a battle. Both guys left it all out on the mat, but it was Madrigal who came out on top 12-6.

 

 

RB (Wh)Y Would You Doubt Him

 

Roman Bravo-Young has been tested a bit during this week’s long grinding tournament. But he has yet to fail. Colorado’s Andrew Alirez was just three points away from teching the returning champ as he took a 7-0 lead into the break. But that was the end of his scoring. In the second period RBY came alive scoring 18 straight points and moving on to the finals once again with an 18-7 victory.

In perhaps the biggest match of the day, Oklahoma’s Boo Lewallen took on Carter Happel of Iowa and it was epic. The bout was highly anticipated and it didn’t disappoint. Happel got his shots in, but Lewallen controlled the match. Lewallen is definitely on a mission and looks like he’s primed to take home the stop sign after getting the 16-6 tech over Happel.
