Jarod Verkleeren's Journey To Gold
Pennsylvania's Jarod Verkleeren became the United State's second Cadet Men's Freestyle world champion Sunday afternoon. It was quite the improvement for Verkleeren who finished 16th at last years Cadet World Championships. Verkleeren dominated on his way to the title outscoring his opponents 51-5, and only giving up points to his semifinal opponent.
63kg R1: Jarod Verkleeren tf. Vasilii Diaconu (MDA), 10-0 Verkleeren's road to the title started with Vasilli Diaconu of Moldova. Verkleeren picked a couple quick takedowns, and ankle laces, and before the match really got started it was over as Verkleeren picked up the quick first period tech.
63kg QF: Jarod Verkleeren tf. Tobias Portmann (SUI), 10-0 In the quarterfinals it was Tobias Portmann of Switzerland's turn to feel the lace of Verkleeren. Much like the first match it was a couple of takedowns for Verkleeren, and a series of leg laces to end the match in the first period.
63kg SF: Jarod Verkleeren dec. Ahmed Medizhadehmarzn (IRI), 9-5 The semi finals brough about the toughest challenge of the day for Verkleeren. Verkleeren sqaured off with Ahmed Medizhadehmarzn of Iran. Trailing by one with just 15 seconds left as they came back to their feet, Verkleeren was able to hit a nasty duck under to get rear standing, and then finished the match in style by throwing Medizhadehmarzn for four as time expired to punch his ticket to the finals.
63kg GOLD: Jarod Verkleeren (USA) tf. Khayrula Nuradinov (RUS), 11-0 In the finals Verkleeren returned to his dominant form. Verkleeren did however get off to a slow start as he led only 1-0 heading into the break thanks to a shot clock point. In the second period though it was all Verkleeren. Verkleeren converted on a dirty super duck then got a series of leg laces to end the match and win the gold medal!
