FloWrestling is happy to announce the first Who's #1 Duals.
In what is planned to be an annual event, Who's #1 Duals will take place in Philadelphia at the University of Pennsylvania's historic venue, The Palestra.
On January 16th, 2016, an eight-team field featuring five of the The Top 8 teams in America, will compete for the Who's #1 Dual team title. #2-Blair Academy (NJ), #3-Bergen Catholic (NJ), #5-Clovis (CA), #6-Bethlehem Catholic (PA), and #8-Lake Highland (FL), will be joined by Delbarton (NJ), Holy Cross (NJ), and St. Augustine (NJ).
Building off the groundbreaking event for individual supremacy, FloWrestling's editor and Who's #1 founder Willie Saylor envisioned a similar tournament for teams.
"Over the past three years, the reception for Who's #1 has been amazing. And we'd like to apply the same atmosphere, fanfare, and pageantry in determining the best in-season high school teams as well. Coach Bell and Nick Matteo have gotten the ball rolling and put together a fantastic field. Almost unbelievable for first-year event. With their help FloWrestling wants put the best teams in the country on a pedestal the way we do with individuals."
Tournament Director Nick Matteo, is excited to see all his hard work come to fruition.
“FloWrestling has a well-earned reputation as the leader in wrestling media, and we are ecstatic to partner with them to develop Who’s #1 Duals. While many individuals worked hard to make this event a reality, the lion’s share of the credit belongs to Bergen Catholic head wrestling coach Dave Bell, Joe Williamson, and Willie Saylor. Through their creativity, partnership and vision wrestling fans across the county will be able to watch some of the most elite high school programs lay it on the line in a historic venue in the heart of Philadelphia. As a wrestling fan myself, I couldn't be more excited."
The teams will be placed into two pools:
Pool A: Blair Academy, Clovis, Delbarton, and Holy Cross
Pool B: Bergen Catholic, Bethlehem Catholic, Lake Highland, St. Augustine
For perennial power, Clovis, it will be a family reunion of sorts. Cougar coaches Steve and Adam Tirapelle will be wrestling in the home gym of their son and brother, respectively, who coaches the Penn Quakers.
We are thrilled to have the Who’s Number 1 National Duals at the historic Palestra,” said Alex Tirapelle, head coach of wrestling at the University of Pennsylvania.
Translated from Greek, Palestra means ‘House of Wrestling’ and I cannot think of a better place to determine the nation’s best dual meet team. Penn Wrestling and The Palestra has been the proud site of many of the most prestigious events in wrestling – including the Olympic Team Trials, the NWCA All-Star Classic, and numerous EIWA Championships. We are excited that FloWrestling has come in and added this event to that list and wish all of the teams the best of luck.”
Wrestling begins at 9AM ET on Jan. 16th. Tickets can be purchased here.
Fans not able to be in attendance can watch on line on FloPRO here.
