Biggest Upsets of 2015 Midlands Championships
With the FloRankings updated now, there were tons of changes based on many of these upsets. I could have expanded this to a list of 20, the upsets were so frequent, but I decided to go with the 7 most surprising upsets at the 2015 Midlands Championships.
7) Emilio Saavedra, ODU vs #10 Eric Montoya, Nebraska
This was one of a few upsets Saavedra pulled along the way en route to a Midlands title. Midlands was the site of his first ranked wins in his d1 career and he went out and earned 3. Hear a word from the man below:
6) #18 Steve Bleise, NIU vs #3 Kevin Jack, NC State
Bleise has been up and down this season. HeÂ’d beaten some tough guys, but Kevin Jack seemed a bridge too far for the NIU wrestlers. Bleise went right into JackÂ’s wheelhouse (scrambling) and beat him.
5) Mitch Wightman, American vs #6 Austin Wilson, Nebraska
Just a vast disparity in results between these two. However, when they toed the line, it didnÂ’t matter all that much.
4) #16 Abe Ayala, Princeton vs #2 Jack Dechow, ODU
If youÂ’ve read/listened to me much you know I think Ayala is a superstud. That said, I didnÂ’t think heÂ’d be able to take out #2 Dechow. He did though.
3) #15 Tanner Hall, ASU vs #5 Amar Dhesi, Oregon State
Dhesi was in cruise control late. It cost him, big time as Hall didnÂ’t get the memo he shouldnÂ’t be beating #5 Dhesi.
2) Rick Durso, F & M vs #2 Chris Mecate, ODU
Durso had been struggling much of the season and as a returning All American fell out of the rankings. Mecate had been solid and beat Kevin Jack already this year. That said, Durso got it done and took out Mecate.
1) Matthew Kolodzik vs #4 Anthony Ashnault, Rutgers
A few weeks ago Kolodzik was majored by True Freshman Ke-Shawn Hayes. Then he takes out Ashnault in a somewhat lopsided affair. He hit a 4 pointer from a knee tap early and slowly pulled away from there.
