Former World Champion and Olympic Silver Medalist Yoel Romero failed one of his out-of-competition drug tests under the UFC’s Anti-Doping Policy, as reported by Bloody Elbow.
Romero, who has wins over Olympic Gold Medalist and current Penn State head coach Cael Sanderson, was in conversations to take on new UFC Champ Luke Rockhold, however, this obviously puts a halt on that. The banned substance that Romero tested positive for is not yet known, nor is his punishment.
MMA journalist Ariel Helwani reported via Twitter the he has two weeks to decide if he would like to appeal the violation which was reported to the UFC on Tuesday.
Romero currently holds an 11-1 professional record and has been climbing the ladder for a title shot with his last victory coming just a few months ago at UFC 194.
This statement was release in relation to Romero’s results:
The UFC organization was notified today that the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) informed Yoel Romero of a potential Anti-Doping Policy violation stemming from an out-of-competition sample collection.
USADA, the independent administrator of the UFC Anti-Doping Policy, will handle the results management and appropriate adjudication of this case involving Romero. Additional information will be provided at the appropriate time as the process moves forward.
No matter what happens with this situation, one thing that we all know is that Tim Kennedy is pretty happy about it.
