Complete recap of the 2016 15u Flo Tulsa Nationals tournament.
The Flo Tulsa Nationals concluded over the weekend with the crowning of 15 champions. In one of the toughest events of the season, four wrestlers were able to keep their quest for a Trinty Award alive as they followed up their Flo Kickoff Classic championship with a title this past weekend.
The four wrestlers who will compete in April for the Trinty Award are 101-pound Robert Howard, 157-pound Zane Coleman, 200-pound Zach Marcheselli, and 285-pound Gabriel Herrera.
Below is a look at the top place winners in the 15u brackets.
75 POUNDS
Jacob Rundell of Illinois had an impressive four-match run in the 75-pound bracket winning by either fall or technical fall before beating Kenneth Sailas of Colorado by a 7-1 decision in the title match. Sailas took second place by rule over Maryland’s NaSir Wilkinson, whom he beat by a 2-0 decision in the winner’s bracket.
82 POUNDS
In the 82-pound competition, Iowa’s Cullan Schriever went 5-0 including a win by major decision (10-2) over Colorado’s Wyatt Yapoujian in the championship match. Yapoujian bounced back by winning the second-place match with a 6-5 decision over Parker Decker of Texas.
89 POUNDS
Jeremiah Reno of Missouri allowed only eight points in his six-match run to the 89-pound title, capped by a major decision (9-0) victory over Dylan Ragusin of Illinois in the title match. In the second-place match, Pennsylvania’s Drew Munch held on to win a tough 8-7 decision over Ragusin.
95 POUNDS
The 95-pound bracket was won in dominant fashion by New Jersey’s Anthony Clark, who beat his six opponents by fall in 1:47 or sooner, including a victory in 40 seconds in the title match over Colorado’s Dawson Collins. In the second-match, Collins won by rule over Oklahoma’s Garrett Steidley, whom he beat in an ultimate tiebreaker in the quarterfinals of the winner’s bracket.
101 POUNDS
Robert Howard of New Jersey’s kept his quest for a Trinty Award alive as he won all six of his matches including a 7-4 decision over Colorado’s Mosha Schwartz in the title match. Schwartz turned around and won the second-place match with a 6-5 decision over Scotty Richter of Ohio.
108 POUNDS
Dominick Serrano of Colorado won three of his five matches in the 108-pound bracket by major decision including the championship match (11-1) over Fabian Lopez of Illinois. Lopez took second place by rule over Colorado’s Drew Eller, whom he beat by a 5-3 decision in the semifinals of the winner’s bracket.
115 POUNDS
In the 115-pound class, Jesse Vasquez of California won four of his six matches by fall, including one in the title match in only 55 seconds over Noah Villarreal of Illinois. Villarreal earned second place by rule over Oklahoma’s Connor Holman, whom he beat by fall in 2:33 in the semifinals of the winner’s bracket.
125 POUNDS
Oklahoma’s Dustin Plott, 6-0 in his quest to win the 125-bracket, won by a 3-0 decision in the title match over Xander Rens of Colorado. In the second place match, Rens lost by a 1-0 decision against Michigan’s Austin Boone.
135 POUNDS
After winning his first match by fall, Albert Ferrari of Texas completed a grueling run of close decisions in his last four matches in the 135-pound bracket, including a 5-0 decision over Fidel Mayora in the title match. Mayora earned second place by rule over Arizona’s Alfonso Martinez, whom he defeated by a 4-3 decision in the semifinals of the winner’s bracket.
145 POUNDS
Gerrit Nijenhuis of Pennsylvania went 5-0 in the 145-pound bracket, culminating with a victory in the title match by a 7-2 decision over Arizona’s Aaron Gandara. In the second-place match, Gandara was the winner by rule over Colorado’s Isaiah Salazar, whom he defeated by a 2-1 decision in the semifinals of the winner’s bracket.
157 POUNDS
In the 157-pound bracket, Zane Coleman of Oklahoma won five of his six matches by fall or technical fall including a victory by fall in 4:07 over Wisconsin’s Tyler Hannah in the title match. In the second-place match, Hannah lost by major decision (16-3) to Colorado’s Drake Engelking.
175 POUNDS
Missouri’s Ashton Sharp, 4-0 in the 175-pound competition, survived with a sudden victory (4-2) over Oklahoma’s Konner Doucet in the title match. Doucet turned around and won the second-place match over Drake Barbee also of Oklahoma in a tie-breaker (2-1).
200 POUNDS
Zach Marcheselli of Oklahoma won his three matches in the 200-pound competition by technical fall or fall, including the title match by fall in 1:12 over fellow Oklahoman Justin Johnson. In the second-place match, Johnson won by fall in 2:59 over Missouri’s Braxton Lennox.
285 POUNDS
Gabriel Herrera of California culminated an impressive four-match run through the 285-pound bracket with a 5-1 decision over Missouri’s Jadyn Withrow in the title match. Withrow took home second place by rule over Colorado’s Andy Garcia, whom he defeated by tie-breaker (1-0) in the semifinals of the winner’s bracket.
