Upsets are the norm in college wrestling. We are learning that each and every week. That said, the magnitude of our #2 upset sent shockwaves throughout the wrestling community. Yet it still wasn't the biggest shocker of the week. It was tough to pare it down to just 10, so we're starting our honorable mention section.
Honorable Mention:
#13 Chad Walsh, Rider over #8 Austin Matthews, Edinboro
#13 Rick Durso, F & M over #8 Todd Preston, Harvard
#20 George Pickett, Cornell over #15 Ryan Preisch, Lehigh
#11 Reuben Franklin, CSU Bakersfield over #9 Nathan Rotert, SDSU
#10 Luke Smith, CMU over #6 Brian Murphy, Michigan
10) #9 TJ Dudley, Nebraska over #7 Sammy Brooks, Iowa
Not a mega upset but the last time these two hit, it was a 6-4 win for Brooks. This time Dudley locked up a sweet cradle for the fall:
9) #20 Alex Griffin, Purdue over #13 Jake Short, Minnesota
Griffin was on the cusp of being unranked. Instead he pulls off the upset over Minnesota's Jake Short.
8) UR Owen Scott, Cornell over #14 John Bolich, Lehigh
Scott has been sniffing in and around the rankings all year. This rivalry could come up huge when the EIWA Championships come around. Cornell will need Scott to contribute if they want to add to the streak.
7) UR Gary Wayne Harding, Ok State over #12 Zach Synon
Truth be told, it isn't a huge upset when you consider Harding beat Synon last year. However, since that moment their trajectories have gone in completely different directions. Harding was dropping matches like crazy and Synon pinned DiJulius and hadn't had a lapse all year. Harding got it done for the Cowboys again in a huge match.
6) #9 Blaise Butler, Missouri over #4 Kyle Crutchmer, Ok. State
When I wrote the preview for this dual, I went back and re-watched the Butler/Crutchmer match from NCAA's. It looked like it was just a bad match up for Blaise and he would struggle to stop Crutchmer's leg attacks. Crutchmer couldn't get much of anything going and Butler made it happen in Sudden Victory. This was a much needed win for Butler who had just fallen to Mike Ottinger a week ago.
5) UR Nathan Butler, Stanford over #8 Tanner Hall, Arizona State
Boy the Pac 12 is looking mighty salty (and even) at the 285 weight class. Hall beat Dhesi, now Butler beats Hall. Will be a great bracket to keep an eye on in March.
4) #18 Davonte Mahomes, Michigan over #5 Nate Jackson, Indiana
You've been warned. The Davonte Mahomes I THOUGHT we'd see this year is starting to show his face. It took awhile post-knee injury to regain his form but it's coming slowly but surely. He's now beaten Myles Martin and Nate Jackson this year.
3) #17 Nolan Boyd, Ok. State over #5 Willie Miklus, Missouri
You could say a 17 beating a 5 isn't that huge of a deal and shouldn't be that high. To that I say, get your own list. I watched these two guys wrestle twice and it was just a bad, bad matchup for Nolan Boyd.
2) #3 Jason Nolf, Penn State over #1 Isaiah Martinez, Illinois
While this was definitely the most important, talked about and dramatic win of the entire year. I'm not sure that means it's the biggest upset of the week. Since it was two completely dominant 157 pounders, many of us thought it had potential to be extremely competitive. Our own Willie Saylor actually predicted the upset to happen.
1) UR Frank Garcia, Binghamton over #6 Matt Cimato, Drexel
How's this for a curveball? Cimato has been outstanding all year and beat Jason Tsirtsis. Garcia hasn't been racking up much other than google losses this season. Here's a list of guys who have beaten Garcia this year: Jason Bing, Lincoln Mallinger, Javier Rodriguez, Kenneth Cowan, Danny Reed, Taylor Simaz, Steven Galiardo, Collin Boylan, Mike D’Angelo, Luke Blanton, Christian Barber and Tyson Dippery. Out of nowhere, he beats a top 6 guy? Unreal. Honestly for me it's far more unfathomable than someone as great as Nolf beating an undefeated NCAA Champ.
