Dave Schultz Memorial: Greco Roman Preview

The 2016 Dave Schultz Memorial has special importance. The highest medaling American that is not already qualified will earn a berth at the 2016 Olympic Team Trials held in Iowa City, Iowa April 9-10. Check out the Greco Roman breakdown below. Keep in mind that only Olympic weights are being contested. Catch all the action live right here.

59kg

Seeds:
1. Sam Jones
2. Jermaine Hodge
3. Justin LaValle
4. Max Nowry

Already Qualified:
Sam Jones
Jermaine Hodge
Max Nowry

Pick To Win:
Sam Jones defeated each of the other seeded wrestlers at US Senior Nationals en route to a fourth place finish. He also defeated Hodge at the Bill Farrell. I will take Jones to win the bracket.

Looking To Qualify:
The quarterfinal between Justin LaValle and Isaiah Varona will be a big matchup for the qualification spot. Remember they have to medal to secure a qualifying spot.

66kg

Seeds:
1. Alejandro Sancho
2. RaVaughn Perkins
3. Hayden Tuma
4. Jamel Johnson

Already Qualified:
Alejandro Sancho

Pick To Win:
Alejandro Sancho wrestled Bryce Saddoris to a third match to make the world team last year. He had a disappointing US Senior Nationals, but I expect him to get back on track. The spoiler could be Dylan Ness on the top side of the bracket. He wrestled 75kg at US Nationals, but was at 66kg for the Bill Farrell. After Sancho and Ness lost to former Olympic champion Ji Hyun Jung they met on the back side of the bracket. With another few months of Greco Roman focus watch out for Ness.

Looking To Qualify:

Dylan Ness, RaVaughn Perkins, Hayden Tuma and Jamel Johnson are all looking to qualify for the Olympic Team Trials. The bracket sets up the best for Perkins or Tuma to make the final out of the bottom side.

75kg

Seeds:
1. Dillon Cowan
2. Corey Hope
3. Alec Ortiz
4. Barrett Stanghill

Already Qualified:
Corey Hope
Barrett Stanghill

Pick To Win:
Dillon Cowan made the championship series against Andy Bisek last year. He has yet to qualify as he lost to Speiller and Fisher at US Senior Nationals. I like him to pick up the qualifying spot by winning the tournament.

Looking To Qualify:
Cowan and Ortiz lost in the round of twelve in Las Vegas. They should both be in the mix to pick up the qualifying spot. Two wrestlers of interest to watch are Kamal Bey and Robert Kokesh. Bey has forgone his senior season at OPRF in order to chase his Greco Roman dream. Kokesh was a star for the Nebraska Cornhuskers that is looking to transition into the Greco Roman style.

85kg

Seeds:
1. Ryan Hope
2. Courtney Myers
3. Khymbakhy Johnson
4. Amer Hrustanovic (Austria)

Already Qualified:
Ryan Hope
Kevin Radford Jr.

Pick To Win:
Kevin Radford Jr. pinned Johnson and defeated Myers 10-10 criteria on the back side of the bracket in Las Vegas. I am going to pick him to win the championship here.

Looking To Qualify:
Myers and Johnson are still looking to qualify for the trials. Whoever is able to come out of the bottom half of the bracket should earn the qualification spot.

98kg

Seeds:
1. Kevin Mejia (Honduras)
2. G’Angelo Hancock
3. Jarod Trice
4. Endhyr Meza

Already Qualified:
Jarod Trice
G’Angelo Hancock

Pick To Win:
Mejia just defeated Hancock at the Jack Pinto Cup and earned a silver medal at the 2015 Pan Am Games. He will take home a Dave Schultz Memorial title to South America.

Looking To Qualify:
Endhyr Meza and Patrick Carey are the only two wrestlers eligible to qualify. The higher place finisher will earn the spot if they win a medal here in Colorado Springs.

130kg

Seeds:
1. Toby Erickson
2. Matthew Lamb
3. Tyrell Fortune
4. Zach Merrill

Already Qualified:
Toby Erickson
Matthew Lamb
Zach Merrill

Pick To Win:
Toby Erickson dropped the championship series to Robby Smith last year. He also made the final at the Bill Farrell Memorial in November. He is my pick to win the title.

Looking To Qualify:
Tyrell Fortune and Jack Griggs are the only two in the field with a chance to qualify. The higher place finisher of the two must take home a medal to qualify for the trials in Iowa City.
