Ladies and Gentlemen, the stars will be out on Saturday night in Minnesota as Team USA and Team Minnesota clash at the Cliff Keen Dream Team Classic. Of the 26 guys in the event, four of them come in at the top of their respective weight class with Mark Hall also donning the #1 pound-for-pound ranking as well.
Team USA is chock full of heavy hitters, with the heaviest of the hitters, Hall, sitting on Team Minnesota. Hall aka “The Prodigy” is fresh off his sixth Minnesota state title and will be facing off with four-time Ohio state champ Alex Marinelli.
These guys faced off a few years back in a pretty good bout, and now that they’ve got a few more years of experience under their belts, this one is surely to be worth the price of admission.
Naturally, Hall and Marinelli will cap off the night in their 170-pound battle with the night is starting off at 182 where two-time double Fargo champ #1-Nick Reenan meets Taylor Venz.
But Hall and Marinelli won’t be the only 1 vs 2 match-up of the night. Minnesota three-time state champ #2-Griffin Parriott, who was been champing at the bit to get a shot at the number one spot all season, will take on #1-Mason Manville. Manville just claimed another National Prep title and has sat atop the rankings the entire year after knocking off the previous top-ranked Hayden Hidlay at Who’s No. 1.
Another premier match-up of the night will come at 138 where #5-Mitch McKee meets #7-Brent Moore. Between the two there are 5 state titles in their respective states with Moore having two state gold’s and McKee having three. This match-up is very interesting because Moore has one of the most-deadly front headlock offenses with his far-leg dresser dump and McKee is a Greco specialist who brings a myriad of throws to the table.
The other two premier matches are at 160 and 195. At 160, #6-Daniel Bullard, the future member of the NC State Wolfpack, will wrestle #12-Lucas Jeske. Both guys bring strong resumés and tough styles to the mat, so don’t be fooled by the separation in their ranking because Jeske can scrap despite being the lower ranked wrestler.
At 195, #3 (at 182)-Keegan Moore is moving up to 195 to take on #3-Ben Darmstadt. On their feet I’d have to give the nod to Moore, but the edge on the mat goes to Darmstadt who has a dangerous top game. Getting entangled in the long limbs of Darmstadt could cause problems for Moore if he decides to go underneath him.
The guys matching up at 113 and 120 are going to be fun to watch for sure because each one of them loves to mix it up and score points. Also, make sure you pay close attention to the heavyweight bout, it could be one of the last times we see top-ranked Osawaru Odighizuwa on the mat since he will be trading in his headgear for a helmet when he goes to UCLA to hunt down quarterbacks from his defensive end position.
But it’s all going down right here LIVE ON FLO on Saturday night from New Prague High School in Minnesota beginning at 7pm CT.
