There are upsets, and there are surprises. But then there was Day I of the NCAA Championships in Madison Square Garden in 2016.
When the dust settles and everyone has time to research, I'm sure that records for most seeded losses, most All Americans to go 0-2, and various other feats of ignominy will be recorded here.
You can read about the historic glut of upsets here. And the bona fide studs that didn't even make Day 2 here.
But for now, let's turn our attention to what we should be looking out for entering Friday.
The quarterfinal match-ups and of course the semi's, are amazing every year. A win there guarantees All American honors and a big jump in team points for your school. But below are five situations to particularly keep an eye on.
5) An IMAR-Miller Semifinal
After Miller defaulted out of the MAC tournament, there were rumors that he was pretty banged up. It sure didn't appear so Thursday. He looked sharp. After last year's NCAA's where he was robbed of a shot to advance, the crowd might be on his side in a bout with the defending champ that should have a high pace and point total.
4) Dhesi-Snyder Quarterfinal
America loves Kyle Snyder. And I think America is rooting for a Snyder-Gwiz showdown in the finals. But first, Kyle has a very scary opponent in Oregon State's Amarveer Dhesi, who has the experience, skill, and technique to go with Snyder. We're talking about a Junior World Champion here. Like Snyder, he's a smaller, athletic, and quick-footed heavyweight. Maybe it's just me, but I'm VERY interested in how this plays out.
3) Nickal-Rogers Quarterfinal
I think most would say that Nickal is the man to beat at 174. But Chandler Rogers is a high flyer that always has a puncher's chance. Bo isn't afraid to mix it up. There could be fireworks here and the match is absolutely critical for the team race.
2) The Top Half of 141
With a pair of 4-1 decisions, top seeded Dean Heil didn't look particularly impressive. It's critical for the Cowboys' team chances that he makes the finals. First up is a date with Joey Ward who gave him his only loss on the season. On the other hand, if Anthony Ashnault, a legend in the NY/NJ area upsets him in the semi's, The Garden will basically adopt him. It could be a great story for the 2016 NCAA's and the Rutgers' program in general. Want more hype? If it's Ashnault vs. fellow NJ product Joey McKenna in the finals, the place will be lit.
1) The Team Race
Almost nothing was decided on Day I as far as the team race is concerned. Check that. One thing was clear - defending champs Ohio State are clearly in the mix. Although they were projected by FloWrestling to take 3rd, they were well (18.5pts) out of 2nd in our calculations. They needed everything to go right, and they pretty much did. Oklahoma State lost it's first two bullets in Klimara and Harding (think about the 'what if' with Kaid Brock) but had a fantastic day otherwise as the other eight guys went 15-1. They are right where they need to be.
Nebraska is currently in 4th after a stellar Day I. But they're quarters match-ups are brutal. Expect them to fall back.
Iowa is in a cluster with Mizzou and Tech tied for 5th. Although Alex Meyer lost a terrible match, and Sam Stoll's injury proved too much to overcome, the Hawkeyes day went pretty darn good. After quarters, where they are favored in four (some would say all) of their five match-ups, they'll climb into the top tier.
The way it looks now, Penn State has five 'locks' for the semi's. Ohio State and Iowa both have the potential to push that many (5) to the semi's, too.
Oklahoma State has the most quarterfinalists with 7, but a number of them (I would say 5 of the 7) are toss-ups and/or underdogs.
I think I know a lot about wrestling, but after today, there's no way I'm predicting what's going to happen.
That's what makes Friday morning truly 'Must Watch'.
