D1 Redshirt Report: 157 Pounds
There are plenty of unknowns in this redshirt report, from the weights the standouts will wrestle at to their schools. Adding to the intrigue, this class features a fleet of extraordinary wrestlers who spent time in the fire through varsity, the bench and their redshirt years. There's a lot of talent and experience in this group that should lead to strong performances from a number of these guys next year.

Zack Beitz -- Penn State | 2016-2017 Eligibility Year: Redshirt Senior

Record: 14-4
It’ll be interesting to see what becomes of Beitz next year. Between Retherford and Nolf, there won't be room for Beitz to start. With Penn State's #FirstWorldProblem of finding room for every hammer becoming more difficult, perhaps Beitz will find a home elsewhere?

I can only speculate, but since Beitz already completed his undergraduate degree, he’ll have some flexibility. Certainly, he’ll have a number of suitors hoping to benefit from his services, even if it will only be for the year.

He's posted some remarkable wins over the last two years: Alec Pantaleo, Hunter Stieber, BJ Clagon, Josh Kindig, Matt Cimato, Mike Racciato, Luke Smith, Aaron Walker, May Bethea (twice) and Russell Parsons. Should he choose to wrestle next year, he'll be a legit All-American threat regardless of where he winds up.

Beitz puts Kindig away:

Brian Hamann -- North Carolina State | 2016-2017 Eligibility Year: Redshirt Junior

Record: 9-1
Hamann will come off of his redshirt season with big shoes to fill after teammate All-American Tommy Gantt graduated 157 pounds, but looks like he's up to the task. Hamann turned in a solid redshirt campaign where he went 9-1 and knocked off Zack Beitz and Justin Staudenmayer. He turned in his lone loss this season to Tyler Herzog from Roger Williams. Prior to last year, he turned in some tough wins by knocking off All-American Dan Neff and Justin Arthur.

Ken Theobold -- Rutgers | Redshirt Senior

Record: 22-5
Theobold will be a welcome addition to whatever weight class he goes to next year, whether it’s 157 or 149 pounds. With Richie Lewis potentially moving up to 165 pounds, it could make room for Theobold here, or at 149 pounds. Over the years, Theobold has accumulated an impressive number of wins.

During his redshirt year, Theobold knocked off Dylan Palacio, CJ Cobb, Drew Longo, Alex Griffin, Max Thomsen and Gabe Moreno! Yowza. A year ago, Theobold was up and down, but when you stack up the wins, it’s pretty impressive: Christian Pagdilaio, Matt Cimato, Zack Beitz, Chris Perez, Justin Arthur, Jake Short and Kyle Langenderfer. I’m pretty sure almost every name I’ve listed has been ranked with the exception of guys who were freshmen that year or back-ups (Longo and Thomsen).

The wins speak for themselves. Theobold is going to be an impact guy next year in his final year for the Scarlet Knights.

Joey Lavaliere -- Missouri | 2016-2017 Eligibility Year: Redshirt Junior

Record: 10-2
I’m interested to see how Lavallee has improved since redshirting. He’s always been able to closely wrestle good opponents, but he’s struggled to notch the big wins. This year, his most relevant win was over Spartak Chino. Last year was a different story -- he beat Anthony Collica, Cody Pack, Richie Lewis and Justin DeAngelis.

Lavallee has traditionally worked a lot from a knee, which can make getting scored on difficult, but also hinders you a bit offensively. I’m curious if he’ll depart from this practice or stick with it.

Jordan Kutler -- Lehigh | 2016-2017 Eligibility Year: Redshirt Freshman

11-4
Kutler, a top-30 recruit after a stellar senior season, posted a solid opening set in his first year of collegiate competition. Expect him to carry that momentum into next year, but perhaps not at the same weight. With two-time All-American Mitch Minotti slated to return, I won't rule Kutler out as a 149-pound prospect.

Great positionally with very strong hips and an outstanding re-attack, Kutler's go-to-attack is a high crotch, which is a thing of beauty. He can occasionally get caught flat-footed and taken down, but when Kutler gets his hips on you, he’s tough to take down.

Kutler wins Prep National Title:

This next group of guys turned in solid years, but didn’t really have the elite wins. Nonetheless, they make the report for a combination of factors. For a lot of guys, just going out, wrestling a bunch of matches and beating who you’re supposed to beat is a pretty strong indication of how someone will perform. That's why I expect Early, Trimble and De La Riva to turn in solid seasons.

Obviously, the upside lies with the Early, a freshman who came to Minnesota as a coveted recruit with amazing talent. I expect Trimble and De La Riva will work their way into the rankings over time.

Larry Early III -- Minnesota | 2016-2017 Eligibility Year: Redshirt Freshman

Record: 10-4

Lorenzo De La Riva -- CSU Bakersfield | 2016-2017 Eligibility Year: Redshirt Freshman

Record: 18-3

Nicholas Trimble -- Michigan State | 2016-2017 Eligibility Year: Redshirt Senior

Record: 9-2
