Cadet Freestyle National Duals kickoffs today in York, PA. The Minnesota Storm claimed the greco crown yesterday, defeating PA Blue, 37-35. Team Illinois will seek to win their fourth straight freestyle championships this weekend. Cadet Duals attracts some of the best high school underclassmen and future prep stars in the country. Here are the top five guys you should keep an eye on this weekend.
88lbs: Cullan Schriever (IA)- Despite going 0-2 at UWW Cadet Nationals, Schriever has turned heads nationwide. The multiple Tulsa Nationals and Iowa state champ won a freestyle national championship last summer in the schoolboy division, tech-falling his way through the tournament. Schriever is currently ranked fourth on our Jr. High big board and will look to continue to turn heads this weekend at the cadet level.
126lbs: Beau Barlett (PA)- There’s no doubt about it that the number one ranked Jr. High wrester in the country, Beau Bartlett, is for real. Bartlett reached triple-crown status last summer after breezing past the competition at Schoolboy Nationals in route to winning a greco and freestyle title. He pinned and tech-falled his way through the Northeast Regional, which included a 14-4 victory over National Prep champion, Chris Cannon who is currently ranked 18th on FloWrestling's freshmen big board. Bartlett hasn’t always been perfect though, he took 8th two weeks ago at UWW Cadet Nationals in Akron.
126lbs: #4 Nick Raimo (NJ)- Raimo brought home two stop signs last summer from Fargo, winning in both greco and freestyle in dominating fashion. Raimo didn’t wrestle a full match the entire tournament until his finals match in freestyle. New Jersey Red and PA Blue met in the finals of Pool B, which set up Raimo vs. Bartlett at 126lbs. Unfortunately, Bartlett was forced to injury default just 44 seconds into the match.
Watch Raimo earn his second stop sign over Alex Thomsen of Iowa.
160lbs: #13 Julian Ramirez (FL)- Ramirez has little experience at the national level in freestyle and greco but has seemed to have little trouble adjusting. He went undefeated in greco and helped his Florida team to a 10th place finish overall. As a sophomore, he won his second consecutive Florida state title this season. He also won an NHSCA title this year in the sophomore division, defeating PA state place-winner, Edmond Ruth in the finals.
195lbs: Braxton Amos (OH)- The West Virginia native is forced to rep neighboring state, Ohio, due to West Virginia not having a team represented. Amos won a Super 32 title in the middle school division last fall and has claimed multiple state championships. He is currently ranked eighth on the FloWrestling Jr. High big board.
Watch Amos drop a tough match Friday against PA state champ, No.16 Gavin Hoffman.
